This is finding contraband more than strip searches.
So it's not a question about whether we should invest in that.
Yeah, but yes, it doesn't traumatize women.
And I'm not a fool.
I know that by introducing the body scanners, women will get charged with things because they'll think they can beat the scanners.
But for the women who don't have contraband on them, we're not traumatizing them.
So I think gender responsive, things like that.
Also phone calls and communication with family needs to be free.
Prison visits for children need to be more trauma informed.
The way that we set up our visits area, the way that we receive children into prisons to see their parents needs to be more trauma informed.
And New Zealand does this great.
The prison that I visited, their visits area's got a playground and couches and toys and
It's like excellent compared to the prison visit system I know.
The next thing would be that we need to, and this one's always going to be polarizing, we need to increase the rate of pay for women in custody.
So currently women are getting paid $38 a week to do a full-time job and there's no minimum wage and it's slave labor.
Wow.
we have a fair work system here in Australia that protects the minimum wage of anyone that's doing any work in this country.
And that's for a reason.
That's to make sure that people aren't being exploited.
