Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Hello, I'm Stephen Carroll. I'm in Brussels, where many of Europe's biggest decisions get made.
And I'm Caroline Hepke in London. We're the hosts of the Bloomberg Daybreak Europe podcast.
We're up early every weekday, keeping an eye on what's happening across Europe and around the world.
We do it early so the news is fresh, not recycled, and so you know what actually matters as the day gets going.
From Brussels, I'm following the politics, policy and the people shaping the European Union right now.
And from London, I'm looking at what all that means for markets, money and the wider economy.
We've got reporters across Europe and around the globe feeding in as stories break.
So whether it's geopolitics, energy, tech or markets, you're hearing it while it happens.
It's smart, calm and to the point.

Chapter 2: What are the latest trends in the stock market?
Here are an interview with Chicago Fed President Austin Goolsbee on the Bloomberg Talks podcast. America's employers delivered a surprising 115,000 new jobs last month, despite an economic shock from the Iran war. Hiring was better than the 65,000 forecasters had expected, but it did decelerate from the 185,000 jobs created in March. BlackRock global CIO Rick Reeder.
I think the economy is growing. I think the economy is growing quite vigorously. I think you could hit 6% nominal GDP this year.
Hear more from BlackRock's Rick Reeder on our Bloomberg Talks podcast. Macro Policy Perspectives president and founder Julia Coronado pushed back on Reeder's take.
It is a very deeply bifurcated economy. And that's what we see in the consumer sentiment numbers. A lot of gloom amongst the average consumer facing higher gas prices, facing not a weak labor market, but certainly not the strong labor market they enjoyed a few years ago.
And consumer sentiment fell to a fresh record low over concerns about the impact of inflation on personal finances and buying conditions. The latest University of Michigan Sentiment Index decreased to 48.2. That's down from 49.8 last month. Survey director Joanne Hsu tells Bloomberg a third of consumers surveyed mentioned high gas prices.
We really shouldn't be surprised at all by these negative reads. Consumers have been under a tremendous amount of strain and particularly with these climbing gas prices, there's only so much consumers can do to pull back their gas consumption and that just leaves less money for everything else.
Consumers' perceptions of their current financial situation slid to the lowest level since 2009. A federal trade court declared President Trump's 10% global tariffs unlawful, granting a request by small businesses and mostly Democratic-led states to invalidate those tariffs. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett says the Trump administration is now studying all options.
But we have a backup plan that is going to make sure that the president's trade policy is made a reality very, very shortly.
