There's always another twist.
Chapter 2: How is Ryan Johnson positioned in the Canucks organization?
There's always another turn when it comes to covering the Vancouver Canucks, and we'd do well to remember that. Even as we break down, when we're about to break down, there's always another shoe to drop. Beware. Be on guard. Take nothing to the bank, especially not gold.
I hope you really like... You can always take Johnson to the bank, though. I hope you really like... That's not where I'd take it. Anyone? All right. Let's not get into the Redwoods and everything again. If you are a big fan of caveats, this is the show for you. This is the show for you. If you're a connoisseur of caveats and hypothetical statements, this is the show for you.
Because we're in that moment where, and we'll get to it in a second, where there's...
Chapter 3: What role might the Sedins play in the Canucks' future?
Very strong indications that this search is going in one direction, but nothing is official. And even the reporters reporting it are not saying that it's official or that it's a done deal. So we're going to talk around it, but we'll try to work through the implications, even the implications of the uncertainty and all that and what it might mean for the Canucks.
Yannick Hansen will join us at 1230 as well. And of course, Yannick has a relationship as a teammate, former teammate with Ryan Johnson. So we can talk to Yannick about that and the potential of him taking over as the GM or possibly just the head of hockey operations for the Vancouver Canucks.
But to kind of dive into all the stuff I'm talking about here and really work through what's unfolded this morning, let's go to the whiteboard.
All right, now fellas, hey, let's focus up, huh?
It is your daily deep dive into what's up with the Canucks for today, May 12th. And the headline is, as you alluded to, another twist, another turn in the Canucks GM search. But it does feel like maybe we can see the finish line now and more so see the destination. Elliott Friedman earlier today on the Fan Hockey Show, which you can hear every day here on Sportsnet 650, says...
said that RJ, Ryan Johnson, current AGM of the Canucks, has a good shot to be the next head of hockey ops in Vancouver. That momentum is building and has been building this morning and today on that front for Ryan Johnson. Irfan Ghaffar, not too long ago, tweeted that the Canucks have offered Ryan Johnson the job to be the next head of hockey ops and, quote, can't see him turning it down.

Chapter 4: What implications does Evan Gold's status have for the team?
So... Of course, we've heard really since last Friday that the final two candidates were Evan Gold from Boston and Ryan Johnson. And then yesterday we had the Sedin news really pop up and the news that they are going to take a larger role in the organization. And now it seems like the search is drawing to a conclusion, although, as you note, the
Never say never when it comes to the Vancouver Canucks. And Elliott Freeman did in a subsequent tweet include his patented nothing is done until it's done caveat, which, you know, I was disappointed he didn't include on the fan hockey show. And then I saw it in the tweet. I was like, there it is. There's the note that nothing is done until it's done.
But certainly it seems like it's trending in the direction of Ryan Johnson.
I've got multiple league sources hearing similarly, obviously have not got it confirmed that Ryan Johnson is going to be the next Canucks hockey operations leader. I would doubt that anyone gets confirmation of that. Maybe Friedman does, like 30 minutes before the press release sort of thing, because this club has shut things down and kept a pretty tight cone of silence.
And by the way, I'd add this.

Chapter 5: How are the Canucks addressing their organizational structure?
Evan Gold and the Boston gentlemen who've been linked to him are also famous for keeping a very tight ship, running a very tight ship in terms of Information flow, right? One of the reasons that I've been sort of describing him as a cipher or saying he's a bit of a black box, like he doesn't have significant media relationships. He hasn't pursued those sorts of interview opportunities.
He hasn't kind of worked on the public profile. I don't think he intends to. So I think there's an element to which there was this perception that felt like it gathered additional information momentum yesterday that like gold was inevitable. Yeah. And I wonder how much that was driven by like cryptic tweets out of the Boston market from people who don't have a direct line to gold himself.
And Canucks fans assumed they did because they assumed that you know, Gold was a conventional operator and he's kind of not on the media side. Like it's kind of a different thing. And additionally, you know, there was no news really coming from Vancouver. There was like some sloppily worded tweets from Vancouver reporters that people read too much into.
Chapter 6: What are the potential leadership changes for the Canucks?
But for the most part, I'd never heard that a decision was made on a general manager. I think we were pretty clear about it. Oh, yeah.
But, you know, I think... Freeman went on Donnie and Dolly yesterday and said suggestions that a decision has been made are premature.
Right.
And that was before our show, and that's the basis we operated on.
And then during our show, the update that I'd heard was... things are still moving internally in terms of the precise structure vis-a-vis the twins. And obviously those extra wrinkles can impact where you land. So I think we were never as close to the one yard line as it may be felt.
And I think the gold inevitability, which now people are like disappointed about something that may have been vapor in the first place, right? I understand that there's a lot of fans that just wanted something new. They just wanted someone from outside the organization. They wanted a fresh set of eyes looking at this problem.

Chapter 7: How does the Abbotsford connection influence the Canucks' strategy?
And I think that's perfectly reasonable, by the way. I mean, I echoed that sentiment yesterday to some extent. I'd also say that I've been very high on Rian Johnson throughout this process. I don't want to go so far as to describe me as stumping, but I've certainly been comfortable highlighting all the reasons why I find him to be a... Here's the problem, man.
Here's the, can we tie off one thing here before we get more in depth on the, I think, cause we're getting a lot of texts in about it. And I've seen a lot of questions in about it as well. The phrasing from both Elliot Friedman and Irfan Ghaffar was not, they've offered him the GM job or there's momentum for him to be the GM. It's there's momentum to be the head of hockey ops.
So that's led to a lot of speculation. Well, hold on. If it's the GM, why aren't these guys just saying he's going to be the GM? Is it possible that Evan Gold could still be involved in some capacity here? Now, as it happens, we have a pretty direct link to Elliott Friedman working here in the studio with us. That's our producer, Dom Schramatti, who you might have heard also produces 32 Thoughts.
Chapter 8: What questions remain about the Canucks' future direction?
Dom, do you have some info to relay on that file for us?
Yeah, Elliott Freeman called me moments before the show and just relayed to me that if, in fact, Ryan Johnson takes the job, Evan Gold is not involved in that hire. And then another insider texted me the same info. Wow, you know two insiders? I know many. I know many. Well, three, actually. I've got one sitting in front of me, too. Jamie? I'm legitimately shocked.
He's a boat shoe insider. An insider other than Elliot Friedman. He's a boat shoe insider. Wow. I've got that file locked down. Yeah, no kidding. I am so stunned to hear that another insider other than Elliot Friedman texted you. Why? I don't know. Why are you stunned by that?
Work on 32 thoughts. Why would you be shocked?
Congratulations, though. I like the idea that is it Sperry that has the brand of boat shoe called a top sider?
That's what I'm wearing right now.
So you're a Sperry insider.
Yeah. Yeah.
That's your specific hockey brand of boat shoe.
