Chapter 2: How did the trivia segment engage listeners and fans?
Ashley Fine Floors, 143rd Street, 111th Avenue. Open Monday to Saturday. And again, we're just in the process of negotiating contact with our guest, Brian Lawton. Guests and owners now receive gift certificates to Roos Chris Steakhouse. A 500-degree sizzle, prime cuts, and service that stuns. Make your next date night or celebration unforgettable. It is Edmonton's best steakhouse. Roos Chris.
Have we got a malfunction at the junction in the sub? What's going on here right now? Can you call us? I'll tell you, it's like, can you call us? Uh-oh. Yes. Edmonton Oilers, it'll be Connor Ingram getting the start. I thought Tristan Jari played decently the other night. Edmonton was outplayed. The Oilers were outplayed by the Anaheim Ducks in both games down in SoCal.
I don't think there's any questions. And I know there's a lot of pundits out there and experts say that the Oilers look tired. They better play their best game tonight or their season's going to be over. It's really that simple. And they've got to get over what happened, and that is not going to be easy. Not going to be easy. Congratulations again to Steve for winning trivia.
And, of course, when you do trivia, you get about 200 answers, so you can't circle back quickly. Oh, we got more than 200 this time. Back into the Oilers' text line, Ashley Finefloor's text line as we speak. Bob, game four is over. The Edmonton Oilers need to focus on winning the next three. No, they need to focus on winning one. They need to focus on winning one. Again, no question about it.
Bob, I was wondering why the play stopped at all. There was never a whistle nor a goal light, and that is true. There was no goal light, and there wasn't a whistle. And I don't buy the after the fact, oh, one of the referees saw the puck go in the net, not from the angle that they're at. I don't buy that. I do buy that Edmonton has to get over it and get past it.
And unfortunately for the Oilers, this is not the first time that they've had tough luck against the Anaheim Ducks in that building. This text comes in. Bob, does the team need to take a flyer on Patrick Laine this offseason? I'm going to guarantee you someone takes a flyer on Patrick Laine. He is represented by Otagon. That is the same agency as Leon Drysaddle. Here's what we're going to do.
We're going to quickly go into break, and then we'll see if we can work on hooking up with Brian Lott and Bob Stauffer live from... Ford Hall, you're listening to Oilers now. Chapter 3: What insights does Rob Brown provide about the Oilers' performance?
Hockey players have short memories. It's done. There's nothing that could happen that happened last game. They can change now. Whether you turn the puck over, whether you made a mistake, whether you took a penalty that got scored on, whether you lost your man when you didn't get a puck out, any of those things. It happens every game. You forget about it and you deal with tonight.
As far as the goal last game, if it would have been the Oilers that had that, it was the offensive team, the fans would be going crazy if they didn't counter the goal. So to me, it's over. The Oilers are down 3-1, and in all honesty, deserve to be down 3-1, and I'm even the better of the two teams.
Yeah, there's no question. You can be upset by the call, but the reality is the team has to play better, and you've got Chris Knobloch on four separate occasions today recognized as how well Anaheim was playing and what they were doing. So what does Edmonton do from your perspective to change their narrative the rest of the way carrying forward in this series?
Well, it's funny. The bar has changed for the Oilers when we talk about what they can do defensively. After the game, a number of reporters talked to the players and said, we were much better defensively tonight. It was a much better defensive effort. But what do we have to do better next game? It wasn't a better defensive effort. They gave up 38 shots. They gave up four goals.
To me, it was still not good enough. This team is a better defensive team than they showed in this series. And the Ducks can score. They can. They give up chances, but they can score. But the Oilers have just... Third goal. Oilers have the puck on the stick. They don't get it out. Turns up in their own net. Game-winning goal in overtime. Before, there was the controversy...
the trent frederick had the puck on his stick didn't get it out those are plays that need to be made they're they're small details that turn into big problems in important hockey games so to me the others have to be a better defensive team because they're not going to outscore their mistakes against the anaheim ducks because the anaheim ducks we talked so many times you and i over the season where the others would have an off night defensively
But because they played Chicago or San Jose or Vancouver or Calgary, we're like, okay, against a good team, they wouldn't have got away with that. Well, Anaheim's a good offensive team, and they're not getting away with it. Tonight, in this game, they've got to play sound defensive hockey. They have to play a road game on home ice, the type that they've played in Vegas, in L.A., in Salt Lake.
They've had some really good shutdown games where you think defense first. If they do that, get on a couple power plays. Their power play is now starting to look like the normal power play and try to win this game 2-1, try to win this game 3-2. The Oilers have proved in the past they can win that way. We don't know if the Ducks can play a low-event hockey game.
They haven't had to all season long, and they certainly haven't had to so far in this series.

Chapter 4: How can the Oilers overcome their playoff struggles against the Ducks?
Jackson Lacombe is a superstar in the making.
They have not pounded. They've not got in on the forecheck. They've looked tired and they've not hit those guys. And if you look at what Anaheim's done, Anaheim is targeted. Both Matthias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard, Connor McDavid and Leon Dreisand, they have outright targeted those players.
That's what you've got to do. Yeah, they should. Absolutely. You always go after the other team's best players and their minute munchers. The more you hit them, it's harder for them to continue to play 24, 25, 26 minutes. Yeah, they need a more concentrated effort on that. But, I mean, your fourth line doesn't play very much. They didn't have Doc last game.
So your third line isn't a physical line. Dawkins aren't physical players, so they're not going to hit. Hyman looks compromised. He's not the physical force that he was. So there's really who outside of the Colton and Kapanen, who is going out there being physical?
You needed Frederick and Doc. You needed Frederick and Doc to show what they showed late in the regular season in the series, and they haven't done that. And, I mean, Trent Frederick is involved in the goal against and the third and fourth goal against. I like Trent Frederick. I'm going to tell you right now, I think Chris Knobloch had to find a way to use him more this year.
That has not come to fruition. I always used to say it's 75% on the player, 25% on deployment. There was a couple times this year that Trent started to get going, and he got pulled out of the lineup. So, you know, he had a tough night the other night. I don't know what's going to happen there, Rob.
Well, the thing is, they were dominant. The last 10, 12 games of the season, when Doc came back from injury, Frederick and Doc were a force on the ice. And we haven't seen that in the playoffs. Part of it is they're not getting a lot of ice time. They were playing third line to finish the season. Now they're fourth line. I think they're getting like seven minutes, eight minutes a night.
And the comb is good at getting out of the way. So I don't know. The Oilers do not have the makeup right now and with the compromise, Hyman, of being a physical team. The Oilers' third line is not a physical line with Dickinson, Nugent, Hopkins, and Rostelevic. That is not a physical line at all. And the McDavid line is not a physical line if Hyman's not hitting.
And then you have the Kapanen-Propos line, which are physical lines. But they only got really one line that plays consistently that can be physical. And the other thing too, Bob, and you and I both know, when you go after, you target a Makar, a Quinn Hughes, players like that, they're smaller. The Anaheim Ducks star players are all big. They're big. They are big, like Carlson and Gauthier.

Chapter 5: What strategies should the Oilers implement to improve their defense?
Boosh is 6'3", and Ekholm's 6'4".
I agree, but I'm sorry about going after Anaheim. They're bigger than the players trying to hit them. So that's one positive that the Anaheim Ducks have. To me, I have a hard time believing, Bob, that the Anaheim Ducks can win four straight games against an Oiler team. Even an Oiler team is a little compromised with injuries. I have belief that the Oilers will win this game tonight.
If they win that game, there's a little pressure now on Anaheim because they do not want to go to a game seven in Edmonton. But to me, it's, The one thing that I was shocked by, the Anaheim Ducks. Adversity doesn't seem to affect them yet. In the two games they were down 2-0, it did not seem to affect them. I thought it would.
But they've gotten better as the games have gone on and the Oilers haven't.
