Oh, I still, the listeners know that that was my childhood. So we'd at the peak, you know, dad's operation had 380, 390 head and gestation. We had two rooms of 16 that we'd farrow out of. And then you had your overflow, but we weren't changing them every week.

It's a different visual. That's what I'm learning. Because that was my Saturdays. Every Saturday I ground feed. And you typically didn't get to go do whatever you wanted to do until after the feed was ground. And, you know, it was a way to dad also kind of monitor my Friday night intake to where you still had to get up and grind it no matter what it was. Oh, yeah.

Now, at the end of that, I could see the bulk bins were full, the feeders were full. That was a feeling of being done and accomplished. It's not the same when you ask your girls to fold the laundry that's in the dryer. Right. Right? Living in town or to go pick up the dog poop in the yard. It's a different approach.

I just, in my mind, I'm envisioning like the Big Bang Theory TV show and Leonard and Sheldon are writing stuff on a whiteboard and everybody's trying to find the next new thing that's going to be effective. Does that actually happen behind the scenes? Is it just giant whiteboards upon whiteboards of chemistry?

Well, they basically don't sell a combine without automation unless you tell them you don't want automation. So it was literally instant. As soon as this combine was available... 99% of farmers had automation capabilities. Did they use it? I don't know.

Well, I'm way better if I put somebody on my phone and it needs to come with context. Oh, yeah. I can put Eric Schroeder in my phone, but it's going to have to say something about chemistry nerd or doctor of weeds. Something that goes with it because that's what I'm going to search is, hey, I know that guy that does this. I need that.
So do you go to a lot of trade shows?
We are going.
Commodity's actually this weekend. Oh, it is. Okay, yeah. It is this weekend from when the show comes out. Hey, we actually get to come hang out with the Corteva folks. What day do we get to do that? We get to do that on Tuesday over the lunch hour. Is that the last day? That's the last day. Okay. It's a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday show.
Yeah. Doesn't do any use complaining about it.
I've seen a couple of jokes out on Twitter that that's Denver Broncos open tryouts. Oh, is that why you can't push forward? Yeah, the reason you can't have it on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
The whole team needs an overhaul. Everybody in the city is welcome to come try out.
No, yeah.
Yeah, it'd be interesting to see what the numbers would be of, okay, could I make two passes?
I'm probably pretty close to a hoarder because I'm not that guy that doesn't throw away the 6-inch 2x4 because I might use it as a block.
I was driving by a baseball diamond yesterday, and that's the same thing that happens outside of your infield.
And there are times to where I go down and I just needed this length of a screw or I needed that size of a bolt and I kept it out of them stupid Ikea sets or whatever. You always got leftover parts, or at least I always do. And you don't throw those away.
Plant whatever population you want.
What was that slide? Did I take a picture of that slide down at Uchi about the adoption of technology? Yeah. I wonder if I took that picture. It wasn't in your phone. You're not in my phone. Yes, that's very interesting.
I didn't get the picture, but the whole grand scheme of that slide is they were saying, how long did it take for a majority of the machines to go out with auto steer? How long did it take for... 10 years. Yeah. Did it take for a majority of the farmers to get high-speed planters?
They said six months or... Six months. There was a couple of steps between the 10 years and the six months, but... You had to have them clarify that that was new going out the door. That wasn't converting your planter to high speed.
50% of the piece. The majority. Whatever it takes to become the majority. And then the last line item was to have combine automation. Well, they basically don't sell a combine without automation unless you tell them you don't want automation. So it was literally instant. As soon as this combine was available... 99% of farmers had automation capabilities. Did they use it? I don't know.
I still, you need to listen to Tractor Wars. I do, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
So what does Corteva do to get the next generation excited?
Is that what scientists at universities, they want to come work for ag companies right now?
From those sets, right? You get a coffee table and you put it together and it comes with two Allen wrenches.
I would say, yeah.
What are we learning here? Are we just validating what we already know?
Well, we don't need to keep talking about us. Let's get to meet you, Eric. Why don't you introduce yourself to our audience the way you would?
No. No, it just needs to work. It just needs to work. And it needs a better battery.
To an extent.
Right? I still remember cultivating as a kid. Oh, yeah. I did that a couple years ago. A couple years ago, yeah. Yeah, after the drage, yeah. You bought two cultivators.
You have to make it a game. That's why it was fun for half a day.
It's like, oh, look at that. I didn't...
I made one pass without doing any of that. Yeah. And that next pass, you start off and you're like, oh, how did I? What did I? I should have. A little cultivator blight. It was probably boosting yield.
You know that first plant that didn't get cultivator blight and the last plant that didn't get it, you know, that year was probably huge. It's making up for a year. Yeah. So if it wasn't that long.
I had no idea where the conversation was going to go today. I mean, we had a little bit, right? of background on you, Eric. It's wild just to see. We didn't even talk about you a lot.
How do you go from being a nerd to being a
That's how you spend as much time at a company as you have. Yeah. Because it's not been the same job for 18 years or whatever it's been. Yeah.
I like how you put in there, Dr. Schurter. Mr. Doctor. Welcome to the podcast.
I'm that truck driver that takes a different route home as often as I can.
Make sure they don't put wheat on a corn flyer.
Yeah, my dad would tell you, you just got to be 90 miles away from home.
He's from Missouri.
Winners, it's easy to beat up on a winner. We'll see how well this ages.
Right?
You know, I go to some basketball games up at Hilton, and same thing, go to watch football at Jack Trice, and it's nice to go. I want to go for a game a year. Yeah. And then it's kind of like, ah, it's the replay.
Oh, sure.
So we really did appreciate some of the – I didn't know where you were going with that.
I feel like you're going to come out of retirement in the next 24 months. You think? That's a long time.
Pretty good deer.
I'm surprised you haven't brought a mount in.
There's one.
That's funny. That's funny. That is pretty good. I've had a lot of fun. I also want listeners to know that I refrain from making a lot of snip-snip jokes. When you were talking about what we could do to the genes of a corn plant. I'll save that for a Farm for Profit After Dark episode. But no, this was a pleasure.
Is that really an official arm of the government? It's an appointed. So, yeah, we skirted it just a little bit.
Yeah. You know? Yeah. I would say you're welcome back anytime. Absolutely. Enjoyed it. Now that you know what happens inside here, if the pickups are out front.
We're going to have to change locks now that he knows what's in here for bourbon.
Yeah. We do have a chair here. Even if you can't be on camera, you can still shout from the background. Absolutely. Absolutely. A lot of fun. This was great. So what do you tell the listeners, Corey? Crack a cold one. You deserve it.

I was going to say, because there probably wasn't a lot of that technology readily available.
That's true. That's Corey. Corey doesn't like his job.
Yikes. That's 1,900 miles a week. That ain't much.
What's your wife do?
I figured you were going to say teacher or nurse. I feel like those are the answers we get. Yeah.
I know doing math homework with my young girls that I love math. Yep. But I get frustrated on the way they've changed teaching that.
Yeah, you're not wrong there at all.
I almost felt bad when I said hello to you to begin with. I didn't call you Dr. Eric.
Oh, you had to do it to be smarter than her.
