And his point, I'm paraphrasing from another podcast that he was on, but essentially like the argument that everybody should be paying for an RPG, not just the GM, is kind of flawed because nobody says that with Settlers of Catan. Nobody says like, oh, every player should bring their own little miniature box of Settlers of Catan with them to the table. No, it's expected.

You can have one for your entire table. RPGs should really be like that too. Like it should be expected that the true consumer of an RPG are the game masters. The GMs, us, we're the ones that are really buying the products. We buy a lot of products.

I realized that I have spent, even though I've got a bunch of different preview copies of the D&D 2024 books, I got a full set of the physical books and I got a preview copy for Roll20 and I have a preview copy for, or not a preview copy, but like a collaborator copy for D&D Beyond. So it's three versions of it that I have. I have spent 300 bucks on,

on other versions of it because I wanted to have my own set of core books that weren't given to me as a preview copy. I bought the entire set for Foundry and I think I've got some other one where I bought it, but I've spent a lot of money on it too. I spent a ton of money on RPG products. And I think that GMs are really the true customer of RPG products.

But a lot of times the products that are being developed are not really being focused on us as GMs. And a lot of time they try to make products and you'll see everybody does this. A lot of people make products that also has like character options in the hope that players will buy it too so that you could sell more copies. but I don't think they really do.

And I think that it's easier, instead of having a bunch of new character options, why not just write more material that really helps GMs run games? That's something I put as a core tenant when I was making City of Arches. It's something that Scott and Taos and I talked about when making Forge of Foes. Who exactly were we writing this for?

And we were writing it for GMs to be able to modify their games and run things and build monsters and give them settings that make it easy for GMs to run games. Not, hey, here's a whole bunch of new character options.
