Africa Legal Podcast - Episode 12 - 'Battling Prejudice' with Dr Funke Abimbola MBE

06 Jul 2020

Description

In a timeous and frank conversation, for this episode of the Africa Legal Podcast Series, Dr Funke Abimbola, chief executive officer and board advisor of the Austen Bronte Consultancy, speaks to Carol Campbell about racism and the fight for equality. Dr Abimbola was awarded an MBE in 2017 for her work in encouraging diversity, an honour that came as a complete surprise, she says. Of her Nigerian roots she is immensely proud, and while she has lived in the United Kingdom most of her life, it is the city of her birth, Lagos, that holds a special place in her heart. She has an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Hertfordshire - awarded for contributions to social and corporate diversity and her leadership and influence have been recognised by the Financial Times who listed her as being one of the top 15 ethnic minority leaders globally. In this podcast, aimed very much at emerging young lawyers in Africa, Dr Abimbola speaks about how to deal with racism in the workplace, referring specifically to the legal context, and using her own experiences as examples. Young people of colour have many hills to climb for recognition in the West, she warns, but tenacity, hard work and a hunger to succeed sets them apart.
