“I’m 100% African!” Ms. Nagity Deng Science Teacher IG: @_Colour.Narratives “I had to unlearn so much…” This week, we are joined by Nagity, a New York based Science Teacher with a passion for documenting the experiences of Black women educators. She shares her origin story, how her family immigrated to the United States from Sudan when she was a child, the standards of beauty and behavior she faced while growing up in Georgia (including natural hair, and how anti-Black policies impact self esteem of students), and the global problem of colorism. As she prepares to enter her 6th year in the classroom, Nagity reflects on the lessons she’s learned over the years (spoiler alert, she is no longer enamored with British history), and the pride she has about following her own life path. She speaks on why a charter school experience broke her spirit (and how she’s continuing to work through), how she’s growing strong in her authenticity as an educator, and why she loves designing science curriculum based on real world challenges.
