Courage and Spice for Coaches: build your Self-belief and Business in under 30mins a week

Developmentally Minded: How Self-belief Coaching gets to the root causes

13 Apr 2022

Description

In this week's solo episode, I talk in-depth about Self-belief coaching and how it differs from mainstream coaching. When we first train in the fundamentals of coaching, we tend to focus a lot on thoughts, feelings and actions - what our clients think and feel and what they do as a result. Don’t get me wrong, this is amazing! There are huge gains to be made in setting goals and achieving them, massive peace comes from questioning our thoughts. But a sole focus on mindset and behaviour can lead us to solving the 'wrong' problems. We can end up giving our clients temporary relief without ever touching the root causes. In this episode, I give you a whistle-stop tour of Developmental Coaching - what it means to be developmentally minded and how this can deepen and elevate our coaching - with transformative results for our clients. So what’s this episode really about?I talk about the limits of my early cognitive coaching and how I started to have disillusioned feelings about the work I was doing.  Why SBCA is SO different to mainstream ways of looking at self-doubt, coaching and our role as practitioners. I talk about Developmental Psychology and how this body of work that explores what it means to be human, informs coaching. I explain the three stages in the Self-belief developmental model, more about how we coach from a developmental approach and why this is helpful for coaches to know about it.I expand on this by asking what causes us to move between these stages as adults and bring up some scenarios that we can all relate to. I offer why I think it’s so important that coaches have a developmental outlook! Why you should listenI believe that being developmentally minded or having at least a curiosity about psychological development, adds another dimension to the spectrum of psychological diversity we face in our client work. If all of this fascinates you as much as it does me and you're a coach who would like to advance your coaching skills but is on the fence about joining SBCA, this is the episode for you! I hope this episode helps you to start to think more deeply about your coaching, your own development and your clients.Links: Advance your coaching practice and help your clients live their bravest lives - Join Self-Belief Coaching AcademyThe Further Reaches of Adult Development - Robert KeganYou can quote me on that“The courage to create this sense of self–to create an internal sense of safety–is huge!” - Sas Petherick“Having a developmentally minded approach can help us to listen in a deeper way and to be more present to the gap between our client's self-doubt and self-belief.” - Sas PetherickLike what you hear? Why not help me reach more ears (and give my self-belief a boost) with a 5-star rating?
