Dear FoundHer...
Mobilizing a Movement in One Month, with Kitty Brandtner, Founder of March Fourth
09 Aug 2022
“Who’s coming with me to Washington?” Kitty Brandtner asked, the day after the July 4th mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois. Kitty had been attending a similar event nearby with her young family when a man with an assault weapon opened fire on families and parade goers. In a mix of grief and fury, Kitty took to social media and nearly overnight, she mobilized a team of citizens who were also ready to turn their grief into action. The March Fourth movement was born. Within just one week, volunteers planned a rally attended by 500, and organized meetings in Washington, D.C. with lawmakers with one clear mission: To ban assault weapons nationally. Survivors from Highland Park were joined from families of victims from Uvalde, TX to demand action from our government. The noise from this effort resulted in the House of Representatives passing HR 1808. The next stop is the United States Senate following the summer recess. But the work of March Fourth is far from over. Money is still needed to keep the message loud, clear, and consistent until the bill becomes a law. A big part of this is maintaining media presence and driving awareness. March Fourth has also made great efforts to run interference between the families who wish to grieve privately and the media who have violated that privacy. According to Kitty, this is not a political issue, but a human one. Those interested in supporting can spread the word via social media by following and sharing the the information from @march_fourth_.Quotes• “It is this incredible group of mostly women, but also men. It’s not just moms and it’s not just parents—it’s people from all walks of life. But the common theme is that we don’t believe that we should feel unsafe going to a grocery store, concert, parade, sending our kids to school, etc. It shouldn’t be this way.”(14:19-14:43 | Kitty)• “Part of what makes this easy is we only have one goal, there’s no convoluted six-step plan. Our goal is to federally ban assault weapons and to do it right now. That’s it.” (16:45-16:59 | Kitty)• “When there’s a will, there’s a way. If something matters and you put all your energy into it, you’re going to make it happen. There’s no alternative.” (27:00-27:09 | Kitty)Connect with Kitty Brandtner:Instagram | http://www.instagram.com/march_fourth_Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! You can now work with Lindsay 1:1 to build the community for your personal brand or company through the same method she used to grow and scale her business.
