Digitally Yours Podcast Ep1 : Misinformation in the Maghreb - the infodemic in context

From the early stage of the disease, health officials are also battling against what the World Health Organization's director-general called an infodemic. To further discuss the spread of mis and disinformation, we had a conversation with Mona Elsawah, a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford university. Mona is a member of the Computational Propaganda project and studies disinformation in the MENA region and authoritarian regimes. Mona started by getting us through the timeline of the spread of false information online in parallel with the spread of the virus. We spoke of the content of these falsehoods, causes behind their widespread and the direct harm that may cause. Mona highlighted the particularities of the Maghrebian context from religious based fake news to the reluctance to comply with curfews and lockdowns due to the unrest's history of the region. We also discussed responses from social media users arrests for spreading falsehoods online, new laws tackling the subject and platforms responses and fact checking initiatives. Mona emphasized on the importance of going beyond restricting content online to raise awareness and educate the general public. ______ La désinformation au Maghreb: l'info-démie en contexte Depuis le stade précoce de la crise sanitaire, les responsables de la santé se battaient contre ce que le directeur général de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé OMS a appelé “ infodémie”. Pour en discuter davantage sur la propagation de la désinformation, nous avons eu une conversation avec Mme Mona Elsawah, chercheuse à l'Oxford Internet Institute à l'université d'Oxford. Mona est membre du projet Computational Propaganda et étudie la désinformation dans la région MENA et sous les régimes autoritaires. Mona a commencé par nous expliquer la chronologie de la propagation des fausses informations en ligne parallèlement à la propagation du virus. Nous avons parlé du contenu de ces mensonges, des causes de leur diffusion généralisée et du préjudice direct qu’ils peuvent causer. Mona a souligné les particularités du contexte maghrébin, allant des fausses informations religieuses jusqu’à la réticence à respecter les couvre-feux en raison de l'histoire des troubles dans la région. Nous avons également discuté des réactions des utilisateurs de réseaux sociaux suite aux arrestations pour diffusion de mensonges en ligne, des nouvelles lois abordant le sujet et des réponses de ces plateformes ainsi que les initiatives de vérification des faits.
