Episode 113 Motley Crue / Ankylosing Spondylitis

Today the guys discuss the legendary metal band Motley Crue as well as ankylosing spondylitis, a disease which Motley Crue Guitarist Mick Mars suffers from. But before this, Asif tells a little known story about Chris Rock from his childhood, which directly ties in to the whole Chris Rock/Will Smith slap (1:25).  Then they discuss Motley Crue (5:35), Ali’s early fandom and how Asif was “afraid” of metal bands back in the day. After recounting the early days of the band, the guys discuss how the band came up with their name. They then recount their infamous 1982 Canadian Tour and how the band’s controversial image was actually manufactured. They then discuss some of their infamous exploits including Vince Neil being found guilty of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter as well as Nikki Sixx’ drug overdoses. The guys then discuss their mainstream breakthrough with 1989’s ‘Dr. Feelgood’. Ali and Asif then discuss the book and movie about the band, both entitled ‘The Dirt’. They then discuss Mick Mars’ lawsuit against the band, based on his diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (28:42). Ali asks Asif about this disorder, what it is, what causes it and the common symptoms (30:57). Asif then gives the “red flags” regarding when to be worried about inflammatory back pain vs mechanical back pain.
