Families fleeing gang violence and death threats in Central America are seeking asylum in the United States. One of the people helping them is Minneapolis-based lawyer Veronica Walther, who has been practicing immigration law for nearly a decade. Over the summer, she volunteered through the nonprofits Lawyers for Good Government and RAICES at a Texas detention center holding mothers and their children. Veronica’s own mother, Alina Walther, went along to provide Spanish-English interpreting for other lawyers on the team. After a harrowing week, Veronica was at the airport preparing to fly home when she saw one of the families she’d met, leaving for…well, you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out what happened.
