Overview of the Kenyan Electricity Sector.

Ms. Noreen Kidunduhu takes us through an overview of the electricity sector in Kenya.   On 12th March 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta assented to the Energy Bill, 2017. Some of the key highlights of the electricity sector in the new Act include: - incorporation of integrated energy planning - re-establishment and empowerment of energy entities (Eg. Rural Electrification Authority to Rural Electrification and Renewable Corporation) - activation of the feed-in-tariff system to promote the uptake of renewables - establishment of an electricity market - opening up of the sector to private players (with rules limiting vertical integration) - open access in the transmission and distribution system - adoption of minimum energy performance standards (MEPSs) to promote energy efficiency
