#47: meloxicam (Mobic) | Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Acute Gout Flares

Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory non-opioid analgesic medication used to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. A treatment range is often between 5-15 mg PO qd with a max of 15 mg/day. Meloxicam works through reversible COX1/COX2 enzyme inhibition decreasing thromboxane and prostaglandins leading to antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. It is metabolized via the CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 pathways. The time to peak for tablets is around 4-5 hours with a half-life elimination of 13-22 hours. It should not be used during pregnancy and close to conception. Black Box Warning for cardiovascular thrombotic events and GI bleed/ulcerations/perforation.
