Lesser scaup are one of several duck species in North America that have experienced long-term population declines, and despite decades of research, the exact cause of this decline remains unclear. Because of its profound importance as a spring stopover site for migrating scaup and other divers, Pool 19 on the Mississippi River has played a crucial role in numerous scientific studies.
