Episode 123 Describing People Who Aren't Generous: Scrooge! Skinflint! Penny Pincher!

29 Mar 2023

Description

Today we're talking about people who aren't generous with their money or who would rather keep their money to themselves than give you any! As I mentioned on the podcast, it's quite rude to use most of these words so I wouldn't advise using them. In terms of grading, 'tightarse' is definitely the worst, probably followed by 'skinflint' and then 'tightfisted'. If you need to describe someone in this way I would stick with 'scrooge' which is also internationally recognised, where as some of the others are more British English. I mentioned The Christmas Carol in the video. I actually did a reading from this book at Christmas time it's Episode 95 of the podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAralyTzpXI&list=PL6eu7BlE1AJSZA5GgMrFMmskXWE099AWL&index=4 Have a great week and I'll see you next time. Vocabulary Generous - someone who often gives things away, possessions and money, quite easily and freely So without further ado - a phrase meaning 'let's get started'. 'Ado' is is quite old or local English so it's probably used most commonly in this phrase, rather than by itself. super duper famous - just an exaggeration term Scrooge - the name of Charles Dickens's famous Christmas Carol character. got this whole complex - 'to have a complex' is different to 'be complex'. 'Be complex' describes something complicated. 'To have a complex' describes someone who has a specific thing that annoys, frustrates or worries them. Skinflint - someone who is not generous with their money fiver - British slang word meaning £5 note Tightarse- someone who is not generous with their money Tight- someone who is not generous with their money Tight fisted- someone who is not generous with their money Penny pincher- someone who is not generous with their money
