Description

5 Steps To Become A High Performance Athlete - Aaron Phipps and Harry SardinasAaron Phipps, Paralympic gold medalist and Member of the British Empire, was my guest on the Entrepreneurs Are Leaders podcast. His journey is proof that high performance is not about perfection—it’s about resilience, adaptability, and relentless determination. What stood out from our conversation is what he didn’t rely on:He didn’t wait for the perfect timing. He didn’t allow fear to hold him back.He didn’t settle for comfort.Instead, Aaron shared his five steps to becoming a high-performance individual:Take opportunities — push yourself outside your comfort zone.Learn, adapt, and graft — embrace the process of growth.Build resilience — setbacks will happen, prepare to overcome them.Redefine success — it may look different than you first imagined.Don’t chase perfection — true performance comes from doing your best. His story is inspiring, but it’s also deeply practical. Whether you’re an athlete, entrepreneur, or leader, these steps apply to anyone striving for excellence. What’s one opportunity you’ve taken that completely changed your path?About Guest:Aaron Phipps, MBE, is a three-time Paralympian, gold medal-winning Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby athlete, and one of the UK’s 100 most influential people with a disability. At age 15, he lost both legs and most of his fingers to meningitis, yet went on to compete in wheelchair racing, including two London Marathons, before joining the GB Wheelchair Rugby squad and scoring more than half his team’s points at the London 2012 Paralympics. In 2016, he made history as the first amputee to climb Mount Kilimanjaro without assistance, a feat captured in a Channel 5 documentary. Returning to the sport in 2017, Aaron helped lead his team to become world champions, winning Paralympics GB’s first-ever gold medal in a team sport during the Tokyo Games, and later fulfilling his dream of competing at Paris 2024 with his family in the crowd.Timestamps:00:00 Introduction to High Performance Athletics00:04 Guest Introduction: Aaron Pipps00:09 Five Steps to High Performance00:16 Aaron's Personal Story00:19 Entrepreneurs Are Leaders Podcast Introduction00:41 Aaron's Conversation with Harry01:27 Step 1: Set a Goal01:57 Step 2: Take Opportunities03:29 Step 3: Learn, Adapt, and Graft05:12 Step 4: Be Resilient05:50 Step 5: Find Success in Imperfection08:12 Transforming the Worst Day into the Best Day10:12 Turning Negative into Positive17:14 Entering Paralympic Sports19:33 Overcoming Challenges and Support System20:09 Message to Entrepreneurs and Young Generation26:03 Introduction to Company and Personal Challenges26:17 Parental Reflections and Challenges26:58 Overcoming External Judgments27:16 Sports and Pressure Management28:21 Achieving a Gold Medal30:21 Collecting Prestigious Honors33:30 Public Speaking Experiences36:40 Facing Fear and Taking Opportunities43:19 Path to Becoming an Exceptional Speaker46:20 Summary and Closing RemarksAbout Host:Harry Sardinas is a Business Growth Strategist, as well as a Public Speaking, Empowerment, and Leadership Coach based in London.
