So as Valentine's Day approaches, this is your warning to steer clear of the darker side of love, where it consumes, haunts, and leaves nothing but fear in its wake. First, a match made in hell, followed by love bites, literally.
Finally, in our last story, a kiss from beyond. So, wanna hear something scary? Nemesis Love. It's said that love can change you, but sometimes it reshapes you into something unrecognizably horrible. Like in this story, written by one of our featured writers in honor of Black History Month, Marissa Dowell. Sid straightened his shirt and adjusted his watch as he got comfortable in his seat.
Even though the booth he was sitting in was covered in plush pink and red velvet, he couldn't help feeling caged in. But he reminded himself that he willingly signed up to be a contestant on the Love Bubble, the experiment for good people dying to find love. He was ready for the hour of speed dating in this tiny room separated into two booths by a one-way mirror.
As they began, a woman started speaking in his ear. She was the matchmaker. The matchmaker was the one running the show. Sid was a handsome man with a good head of hair and sparkly eyes. He wore that expensive watch to show women his worth. He hadn't been ready for a relationship before. He'd admitted to the matchmaker over the phone.
He'd blown many women off, maybe one too many, maybe far too cruel at times, but now he was ready for his dream girl. And remind me, Sid, who is your dream girl? The matchmaker asked now, through an earpiece. Sid answered without hesitation. She's beautiful and warm, like a ray of sunshine. Understanding and a good listener. Someone who will take care of me until I'm old and gray.
So basically, everything I'm not, he joked. Except the beautiful part, the matchmaker joked back. She advised him to stay true to himself, answer the questions honestly, and he'd leave today a changed man. On cue, his first match entered the other side of the booth. Sid's date couldn't see the enchanting smile he was flashing. Eventually, Sid heard an impatient, Hello? He felt foolish.
He introduced himself and told the person he'd hoped was his dream girl about his high-paying job and well-off family. But his date wanted to talk about something else. What keeps you up at night, Sid? The words felt flirty and a little dangerous. Sid liked it. He answered honestly, ending up in a big house with everything he wanted but no one to share it with.
