
On today's episode, Dennis speaks with OIS Survivor, Steve Scholten. In 2019 while working for a small town 6 person police Timberville police department Steve was involved in an OIS where he responded to a domestic in which he had to force entry and stand toe to toe with a man wielding a samurai sword. Knowing Steve had no place to retreat with this man less than 10 feet away, he was struck with the sword getting severely injured. Steve was awarded Purple Heart, medal of honor, and named police officer year for his heroic actions. Today, Steve tells the story of the incident that unfolded, his battle with recovery both physically and mentally, the struggle of retirement and receiving benefits after he medically retired, advice for officers to better prepare for incidents like this and how we are not alone.
