We're about to watch Jesus. have the last supper with the disciples and then get delivered up for crucifixion here. Now the feast and unleavened bread drew near, which is called the Passover.
And the chief priests of the scribes were seeking how to put him to death for they feared people. The feast of unleavened bread was just the Passover. It was coming. So you got to keep in mind, there's an extra amount of Jews in town for the Passover. Okay. Not like normal. Cause there's a holiday here. We're celebrating.
And because there's an extra amount of people, there's a lot of people that probably respected the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Messiah. Verse 3, Then Satan entered into Judas, called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. and they were glad and agreed to give him money.

Chapter 2: Why is the Passover significant in this chapter?
So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of the crowd. When it says Satan entered into Judas, it means that he prompted him to do this. Judas is solely responsible for his sin against Jesus. He can't take responsibility for fulfilling prophecy that Jesus could be crucified. That's why Jesus later on will say, "'Woe to him who hands me over.'"
because he is fully responsible. Now, when we go back up to verse 2 really quick, it says that the chief priests and scribes feared the people. Notice how they didn't fear God. They feared the people because they wanted to find a way to kill Jesus in a politically correct way because they didn't want to offend the people at the time. Verse 7 says,
Then the day came of unleavened bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John saying, go and prepare the Passover for us that we may eat it. So he's giving them just clear instructions on what to do for the Passover supper. They said to him, where will you have us prepare it?
He said to them, behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. That's kind of abnormal because normally that was a woman's job, but there's a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him into the house that he enters, and tell the master of the house, The teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
And he will show you a large upper room furnished. Prepare it there. And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. Now we're about to learn about the Lord's Supper. is when all believers are gathered with him after judgment has taken place in Revelation. Jesus will return, bring the iron fist, cast judgment on people.
Those who have put their faith and trust in Jesus will be united with him in eternity. And all believers in heaven will have a feast. It's called the marriage supper of the lamb. And at this feast, Jesus will partake in communion once again. Take this and divide it amongst yourselves, for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God has come.
There again he repeats himself. And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. And likewise the cup after they had eaten it, saying, This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant of my blood. So we have to understand what communion is. The Greek word for it is koinonia.
This is the most intimate thing you can do in partaking with Jesus. This may be an intense word, but the word koinonia literally translates to intercourse. Why is that? It sounds weird, but it's powerful. Because intercourse is the most intimate thing you can do with someone on this earth, binding yourself to them.
This means that communion is one of the most intimate things that we can do in relationship with Jesus Christ. Partaking of the bread, representation of the body that is broken for us, his suffering and agony that he takes in sin. And then his pouring out of the blood, the cup, wine, represents the blood of Jesus Christ, the new covenant that wipes our sin clean, giving us new life in him.

Chapter 3: What does Jesus teach about communion?
Again, Judas is fully responsible for his own sin. And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this. So again, he's not calling us to be childish. He's calling us to be childlike. For who is the greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I'm among you as the one who serves.
This is so interesting. So he's like, wouldn't it be so that me sitting here is the greatest among you? And then he says here, but I'm the one serving you as well. He's like, I am the greatest at the table, but I'm also the one serving you. So now he's making a distinction here.
Those that are greatest in the kingdom of heaven aren't the ones who puff up their chest with pride and say, look, I'm the greatest. I've done all these great things. The greatest in the kingdom of heaven who does things out of humility and serves out of humility, out of a heart posture for loving the king. Those are the greatest.
And he says, those who serve me out of love and humility, those are the greatest. It's so interesting. And then he says, you are those who have stayed with me in my trials, and I assign to you as my father assigned to me a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in the kingdom and sit on the thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Now Jesus is about to foretell Peter's denial.
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. Peter said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death. Peter's like, there's no way I'm going to betray you. I'm here with you to the ends of the earth.
And Jesus says, I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day until you deny three times that you know me. And then he said to him, when I sent you out with no money bag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything? They said nothing. So he's talking about when he sent them out in twos and then he sends them out again in 72. He sent the 72 out after he sent the 12 out at a time period.

Chapter 4: How does Jesus describe the betrayal by Judas?
And when he sent them out, he says, don't take anything with you. Don't take any food with you. So he's saying like, when I sent you out, did you lack anything? They said, no, we didn't lack anything you provided. Now he's saying, but now let the one who has a money bag take it and likewise a knapsack and let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.
For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me. And he was numbered with the transgressors for what is written about me has his fulfillment. So now he's saying, look, now that I'm going to leave you guys in a sin in heaven, use your common sense. Like if you need money, sell the things to get the money. Like if you need to bring stuff with you, bring it on your journey.
The thing that he was doing when he sent the 12 out without anything, he was teaching them to lean and trust on him. And he's not telling them not to lean and trust on him. He's saying, now look, I've given you common sense and I've taught you to trust in me. So trust in me, but also use your common sense. It's powerful. And they say, look, Lord, here are two swords.
And he said to them, it is enough. Jesus is about to go on the Mount of Olives to pray. And I love this passage because it's so encouraging to me. And he came out and went, as was his custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, Pray that you may not enter into temptation.
What a powerful understanding that to avoid temptation, one of the weapons against temptation is to pray. And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw. So he didn't go too far. And he knelt down and prayed, saying, Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done. Jesus is not trying to avoid the will of God.
Jesus actually wants to do the will of God. But in his physical body, he's feeling the agony and the suffering that he's about to take to the cross. And he's just asking, God, if there's another possible way out of this, let it be so. But if not, I'm cool with it. I'm cool with it. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven strengthening him. As Jesus is praying, what happens?
The will of the Father is that he be crushed for the sins of the world. So he can't avoid it. But he sends angels to strengthen Jesus. Powerful. And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. His sweat became like drops of blood. Why did it come this way?
My interpretation of the sweat becoming like drops of blood is I believe Jesus is actually feeling the weight of the sins of the world, past, present, and future that he's about to take to the cross. And his physical body is sweating drops of blood. And when he arose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow. Instead of praying, they were sorrowful, they slept.
And he said to them, why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation. While he was still speaking, there came a crowd and a man called Judas. One of the twelve was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said to him, Judas, would you betray the son of man with a kiss?

Chapter 5: What lesson does Jesus share about humility and service?
It's kind of ironic because Jesus is saying, it's crazy to me how you can come up to me and kiss me and embrace me and betray me at the same time. And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, Lord, shall we strike with the sword? And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut his right ear off. But Jesus said, No more of this.
And he touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and the elders who had come out against him, Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour and the power of darkness.
Verse 54, then they seized him and they led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. And Peter was following at a distance. When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light, looking closely at him, said, this man also was with him.
But he denied it, saying, woman, I do not know him. A little later, someone else saw him and said, You also are one of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not. And after an interval of about an hour, still another insisted, saying, Certainly this man also was with him, for he too was a Galilean. But Peter said, Man, I don't know what you're talking about.
And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly.
Now, I don't know if it's in chapter 23 or chapter 24, but there's going to be a moment where the resurrected Jesus is going to meet with Peter, and he's actually going to tell Peter how he's going to die. Really intense. Imagine being alive and knowing how you're going to die. I would not want to know that at all. But we're going to find out why he does that in chapter 23. I believe it's in 23.
Verse 63, now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, prophesy, who is it that struck you? And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him. They just start beating Jesus, mocking him.
Verse 66 to close, when the day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, And they led him away to their counsel and they said to him, if you are the Christ, tell us. Now listen carefully to Jesus' response here. If I tell you, you will not believe. And if I ask you, you will not answer. Why does Jesus say this?
He's saying this because they've already made up their mind. He's already on trial. He's already convicted. They're not going back. They've already found what to convict of him and take him to jail. So there's nothing that they can do at this point. There's nothing that they will do to let him free. They're not going to let him free.

Chapter 6: What does Jesus predict about Peter's denial?
So that's why he says, if I tell you, you're not going to believe me. He's saying, it's not going to matter if I tell you or not, because at the end of the day, you're still going to crucify me. He wasn't avoiding the question. He's actually jabbing them back. But from now on, the son of man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.
Jesus is saying, look, once I'm crucified, I'm going to go sit at the right hand of the Lord. And I'm going to be next time I return, I'm not going to return humbly in submission. I'm going to return in power and glory. So they all said, are you the son of God then? And he said to them, you say that I am. Then they said, what further testimony do we need?
We have heard it from ourselves, from his own lips. We're about to see in Luke chapter 23, Jesus get beaten and crucified on a cross for the sins of the world, past, present, and future. We've seen Jesus pray in the garden. We've seen the last supper occur. We've seen him begin to be beaten and mocked. the picture of Jesus Christ. I saw this podcast clip and it just strikes my heart.
This podcast clip of this man, he said, man, Jesus would have loved to be crucified the way that the passion of the Christ crucifies him. The passion of the Christ is a movie about the crucifixion to Jesus Christ. And it's the most accurate movie that we have of Jesus being crucified. And it's so gruesome, such a gruesome thing to watch.
And it's kind of, it's kind of like a fear of the Lord sitting on your soul thinking like, man, Jesus would have loved to been crucified that way. Like he was beaten so bad that his bones and organs were hanging out. His face was beaten so bad that he was unrecognizable that he was alien. Like he was alienated, looked like an alien.
