For years, people have fixated on how much money LeBron James spends on his body—chefs, trainers, hyperbaric chambers, and state-of-the-art recovery techniques. The number floating around? $1.5 million a year. But in a recent interview, LeBron made one thing clear: it’s not about the money. It’s about the time.In this episode of The Ryan Leak Podcast, we break down why time—not talent, not luck, not even money—is the real key to greatness. LeBron isn’t dominating the NBA at 40 because he’s rich. He’s dominating because he consistently invests his time in ways most people won’t.And that brings us to your time. People say they don’t have time to build a business, get in shape, grow their influence, or strengthen their relationships. But what do you have time for? Social media? Binge-watching? Another round of golf? If you want to go to the next level, you need a next-level schedule. This episode is a wake-up call. No more excuses. No more “I don’t have time.” The reality is, you’re going to spend the next five years doing something—the question is, will it be something that moves you forward? If you're ready to put your schedule where your mouth is, hit play. Let’s talk about what it actually takes to be great. 🎙🔥
Chapter 1: What does it take to be great?
Welcome to the Ryan League Podcast, where we keep it short and sweet. Today, I want to talk to you about what it actually takes to be great. A person who has been at the center of debate when it comes to greatness is LeBron James. LeBron's greatness is has been argued in every barbershop and every sports talk radio show and every sports talk TV show for the last 22 years.
Chapter 2: How much does LeBron James spend on his body?
And what's interesting is, specifically, People have been obsessed with how much money LeBron spends on his body. The chefs, the trainers, the hyperbaric chambers, the state-of-the-art recovery techniques that sound like something out of a sci-fi movie. Like, what is this dude doing all the time?
And the number floating around in which LeBron spends on his body every single year is a cool $1.5 million per year. I've read that stat in countless books, articles. In fact, I've quoted it in some of my talks as well. But I recently heard LeBron say something in a recent interview that surprised me.
Chapter 3: What is LeBron's secret sauce for success?
He said, I've heard this crazy notion about how much money I spend on my body per year, and I kind of just chuckle. That is a number that I will not disclose, but more importantly, I think it's the time. Isn't that interesting? We've been so focused on how much money he spent. He goes, no, no, no. If you really want to know my secret sauce, it's the time that it takes.
LeBron's going, hey, let's talk about how much time it takes to really be me. And it makes sense. Because if you think about it, LeBron is a billionaire. That's with a B. He is a billionaire. So that $1.5 million is a fraction of a percent of his net worth. If you make $100,000 a year, that's like spending $150 on your health. That's a couple of gym memberships. That's if you're not at Lifetime.
Chapter 4: Why is time more important than money for greatness?
If you're at Lifetime, that's half the membership. That'll get you two weeks at Lifetime. But at LA Fitness, you'd be all right with $150. You know what I mean? That's a nice pair of running shoes. That's a few sessions with a personal trainer. What am I saying? The reality is, it's not the money that sets LeBron apart. It's his schedule. It's how he leverages his time.
It's about him understanding the value of the one thing that no amount of money can buy. There are plenty of NBA players who could write the same check, but how many of them are willing to put in the same hours to take care of their body?
How many of them are religiously stepping into cryotherapy chambers, spending hours in a hyperbaric tank, or getting meticulous treatment for every single muscle fiber in their body? LeBron James isn't still playing at an elite level at 40 years old because he wrote a check. He's still dominating because... Well, he committed the time to do what most players won't.
The money gets you access, but the commitment gets you results. Plenty of athletes could afford the same trainers, the same recovery tools, the same nutrition plans. But how many are waking up before sunrise, putting in extra hours in the gym, prioritizing sleep like it's a job, and meticulously managing their body day after day, year after year? Greatness isn't about resources.
Chapter 5: How do routines contribute to success?
It's about routines. So the real question is, what are you willing to do that most people won't? Because greatness requires time. Time that most people aren't willing to put in. Great books require time researching. Great marriages require time being intentional instead of just scrolling on their phones.
Chapter 6: What are you willing to do that most people won't?
Great business requires time understanding their customers, refining their strategy and adapting to change. Great leadership requires time investing in people, listening and making tough decisions with wisdom. Great diets often require time meal prepping. Great friendships require time showing up, checking in and being present, especially when it's not convenient.
Great social media platforms require time creating, engaging, and providing real value instead of just chasing trends. Great careers require time mastering skills, networking, and taking on challenges that other people avoid. Great faith Requires time praying, studying, getting in the Word, and living out your beliefs with consistency.
Great financial freedom requires time, budgeting, investing, and making disciplined choices today that pay off tomorrow. The bottom line is, whatever it is that you want to be great at will not happen by accident. It will happen because you made time for it. Whenever I talk to people about growing in any area of their life, I consistently hear, I just don't have the time.
And I get it, because we're all busy. But as busy as we are, my question truly is, what do you have time for? I have to wonder if we're busy with mediocrity, with a desire to be great. You see, I'm amazed at what we actually make time for. Because we make time for our favorite shows. We make time for social media. We make time for sports.
I read one article that says the average person spends two and a half hours a day on social media. I read another article reporting Netflix says their average user watches two hours of their content every single day. Listen, I love social media, I love sports, I love entertainment, just like the next person. But here's the reality.
You are going to spend the next five years of your life doing something. So the question is, will it be something that moves you toward who you actually want to be? My friends, LeBron James' secret sauce isn't money. It's time. He's not lucky. He's intentional. It's having the same non-negotiables on his schedule every single day.
That's what keeps him in the debate and conversation for being the greatest of all time. So the real question is this. Do I believe that LeBron James is the greatest of all time? I do not. I do believe that goes to Michael Jordan. However, I will say this. LeBron is outplaying my argument because I have argued about this for the last 15 years, and yet he is still playing.
And as of this recording last night, I believe he had 33 points and 17 rebounds or something like that, which absolutely makes no sense from a 40-year-old. And I'm 38, and I get injured just getting out of bed. It's wild. Nevertheless... The real question is, for you, what needs to go on your schedule? If you say you want to be green, I would say you can't just put your money where your mouth is.
You have to put your schedule where your mouth is. My friends, thanks for listening to the Ryan Link Podcast. If today's episode inspired you, don't keep it to yourself. Share it with a friend.
