Description

Twitter @juangangel Caring for a Bonsai tree is not nearly as hard as is commonly thought. However, as Bonsai trees are planted in small pots a few basic guidelines have to be followed when watering, fertilizing and repotting your trees. Different tree species have different care guidelines, so make sure you establish what tree species you have first, and read about the specific needs here: Bonsai tree species guide. This part of the website will give you detailed information about the Bonsai care techniques; use the menu on your right to navigate through the articles, or read about the basics below. Bonsai tree care basics Though Bonsai trees are more delicate compared to the average indoor plant, a few basic rules should enable anyone to take care of its tree properly. Most importantly are watering, fertilization and choosing the right position to place it. Watering Bonsai How often Bonsai need to be watered depends on a wide range of factors, including species of tree, pot size, soil and climate. Do not simply water your tree every day, instead, monitor your Bonsai carefully and water it once the soil gets slightly (but never completely) dry; it should be damp. When watering, do it thoroughly though, making sure the entire root mass is watered. Continue reading on watering Bonsai. Position, temperature and sunlight Deciding on the right place to put your tree is crucial for its well-being. As explained above, different tree species have different needs, so start with establishing what tree species you have. Make sure that indoor trees are placed in a warm environment, with lots of light (most often, only a window facing the south will provide a tree with enough light). Uutdoor trees (although depending on species of trees) generally require much lower temperatures and should be placed outside. Continue reading on choosing the right position. Fertilization Bonsai trees are placed in small pots, therefore regular fertilization is required to replenish nutrients that are essential to the tree. Using a special ‘Bonsai fertilizer’ can be convenient, but any fertilizer will do (be careful not to use too much though). Follow the instructions as stated on the fertilizer’s packaging regarding quantity and timing. Continue reading on fertilizing Bonsai. Other care guidelines Learn more about other Bonsai tree care topics, including how to repot a Bonsai and what to do in case of pests or diseases, using the menu on your right.
