Twitter @juangangel A nature reserve or ecological reserve is a protected area of importance for wildlife, flora, or fauna, or with geological features of special interest, protected and managed by humans for conservation purposes and to provide research and educational opportunities. The first country in the world to have a nature sanctuary was Sri Lanka, when King Devanampiya Tissa ordered the protection of wildlife around the village of Mihintale in the 3rd century BC. However, since ancient times, cultural practices have existed that amounted to the establishment and maintenance of areas reserved for biota, including fish, waterfowl, or other animals. There may have been religious reasons, as in the "cursed forests" of some regions of Africa, where humans were not allowed to enter under penalty of attack by spirits. There have also been sacred taboos prohibiting human entry into certain places. Such prohibitions exist in various places around the world. In modern times, Drachenfels is considered to have been the first nature reserve. Prussia purchased the land in 1836 to put an end to the mining that was taking place in the area. The first large-scale nature reserve was Yellowstone National Park, followed by Royal National Park near Sydney, Australia, and the Soviet Union's Il'menskii Zapovédnik in 1920. This is the first of its kind, a reserve created by a federal government for the scientific study of nature (Weiner, Douglas. 1988. Models of Nature: University of Pittsburgh Press. Page 29). Currently, a very important group of Argentine and international scientists and researchers are promoting the creation of a Nature Reserve in Paramillos de Uspallata, Argentina. The site is highly regarded for its historical richness (the ruins of ancient mines, already exploited by the Incas, and Darwin's itinerary, with the fossil araucaria forest that bears his name), paleontological, panoramic, and flora and fauna, among other assets.
