布劳恩当时规划了从C-1到C-4各种火箭发动机的搭配。其中C-2和C-3都没落到实处,只是一个构想。倒是C-4比较靠谱儿,那就是第一级用4台巨大的F-1发动机,第二级用4个J-2发动机,第三级用1个J-2发动机。J-2发动机的推力足有100吨,比现在的RL-10大多了。C-4火箭只要两枚,就能在太空里拼装出登月飞船联合体。布劳恩算计着,这总够用了吧。这时候,手下的技术人员提出了新的建议。假如放大C-4火箭。第一级用5台F-1发动机,第二级用5台J-2发动机,这样的火箭就足够采用月球轨道停留方案实现登月。也就是火箭直接把登月飞船联合体送到月球轨道。然后登月舱下去,实现登月,指令舱和服务舱在太空轨道里等着,等到月面上的事儿搞定了,登月舱返回太空,再和指令舱对接,把人装进指令舱,抛弃登月舱,大家返回地球。NASA觉得这个办法是最合理的,于是,布劳恩就按照这个构想设计了一个新的型号,那就是C-5,这种火箭就是日后大名鼎鼎的土星5号……
