It's August, 1878. Amherst is a quiet town, home to some 3,000 souls, four churches, a music hall and a she factory. The focus of our story is Esther Cox. She has short, dark curls and grey eyes. She's only 18 years old, but she's already lived a hard life. Her mother died when she was just three weeks old, and she was handed over to her grandmother who brought her up.
