Batman's knocking us off and you're the only one who can take him down. Look, five million up front with whatever you want to finish him off.
What do I look like?
Pest control? Think you fool. Once he gets me, how long till he gets you? You know what I'm talking about. Your hands are just as dirty. Dirtier.
Don't touch me, old man. I don't know where you've been. Oh, Sal, no one could take a joke like you. Of course I'll help you out. Really? Certainement. No way is anybody going to hurt my pal Sal. That's it. That's what I want to see. A nice big smile.
Okay.
It's nice that way.
Leia.
I came to face him, Leia. And I can't save him.

So have you been working a long time for the Jane Austen residency?
I'm Jane Austen's great, great, great, great nephew.
Wow.
Yeah, my parents set up the Jane Austen residency, but I'm not really part of the fan club. I'm just helping out because my father recently lost his driver's license.
Right. And what do you normally do for a living, then?
I teach contemporary literature at King's.
Sorry. You teach literature, but you despise Jane Austen.
I just think her work is a little overrated.
Welcome, futurists, cyberphiles, and the rest of you dateless wonders. And now to push this convention into hyperspace, the man who put the star in Star Wars, a real bird in the Darth Vader's saddle, Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill!
Hey, thanks, everybody. You know, I'm here today as Luke Skywalker, but I'm also here to talk about Sprint. As you can see, you stand to save up to 17 cents a month over the more dependable providers.
I talk about Star Wars! You stupid nerds! He's trying to save you money in long distance!
The Beatles were very, I mean, they actually were funny. Everybody in Liverpool thinks they're a comedian. I mean, that's a well-known fact. And all you have to do is drive up there and go through the Mersey Tunnel and the guy on the toll booth is a comedian. You know, they all are. we had that kind of bred and born into us. And when you just transposed it into New York or somewhere, it was great.
I mean, we were just being hard-faced, really, and they loved it.
Absolutely, yeah. You just dried up and somebody else was already there with another fab quip.
Liverpool guys, 15 years after World War II, and we're now here in Miami. This is the one that sums up the good life in Florida. He's got his shades on, he's got the sunshine, he's got his drink, and he's got the girl in the yellow bikini delivering it to him.
I was in high school. I lived in Alexandria, Virginia. I was into rock and roll music, mainly Elvis Presley, who brought rock and roll music to the world, to me anyway. I ended up going to this concert in I didn't really have any idea that it was the first concert. I didn't, I don't know. And it was, I didn't have any idea how big this event was.
And it was in a gigantic place where they had boxing matches. The Beatles were in the boxing ring. It was so loud, you can't believe.
the first white artist ever of their magnitude that I ever heard in my life, say, yeah, we grew up listening to black music. We love Motown. We listen to black music. We don't know this person. No other white artist had ever said that. Not anyone of magnitude until the Beatles said that.
Eight years old?
As NPR's daily economics podcast, The Indicator has been asking businesses how tariffs are affecting their bottom line. I paid $800,000 today. You paid $800,000 in tariffs today. Yes.
And then it moves you through time. Music is architecture in time. If you engage in the moment with what you're listening to, you do lose a sense of the time around you.
And what that means for your bottom line. Listen to The Indicator from Planet Money. Find us wherever you get your podcasts.
Can I ask you one question before you go?
As long as you understand if it annoys me, I'm just going to hang up. Scout's honor.
Tramble Penitentiary is a long way from Miami, Raylan. You could have I called the warden. Could have sent word through my lawyer.
Asked him why I came. Thought it was news that should be delivered in person. That's the only reason.
After all these long years we had in Gibbons, that's the only reason.
And I suppose if I allow myself to be sentimental, despite all that has occurred, there is one thing I wonder back to you.
We dug coal together. That's right.
That you had to move through.
When Paul Rubens speaks directly to the camera in Pee Wee as himself, framed tightly by the lens and looking frail but still feisty, it's as though he's delivering his last will and testament. And he says as much.
This is such a dumb thing to say, but, you know, death is just so final. You know, that to be able to, like, get your message in at the last minute or at some point, is incredible.
So what is his message in this new documentary? On one level, Rubin sets out to explain his artistic process and the inspirations and motivations behind the character of Pee Wee Herman. On another level, he explores what he gained and lost by refusing to be seen or interviewed as himself for the whole time Pee Wee was starring in movies or television.
And most delicately and intriguingly, Paul Rubens provides his point of view about things that rarely were discussed by him during his lifetime, from his private life and sexuality to his infamous arrest on charges of public indecency. In covering all this ground, Rubens opens up his pack rat archive of personal photos and home movies.
Director Matt Wolfe interviews other people as well, such as Lorraine Newman, who worked with Rubens in the L.A. improv group The Groundlings, and directors Tim Burton and Judd Apatow, and several actors who appeared in the long-running CBS children's series Pee-Wee's Playhouse, including Lawrence Fishburne, Natasha Lyonne, and Esa-Petha Merkerson.
By the time Rubens took his Pee Wee character to Saturday morning TV in 1986, he says he knew exactly what he wanted to do. And Merkerson says she appreciated it.
I just felt right from the get-go, something that I could do that could be very important and very subliminal would be to just make the show very inclusive and not comment on it in any way.
Captain Kangaroo, Soupy Sales, Howdy Doody. You know, none of those shows did I see myself reflected. So that I had the opportunity to be a part of a show that young black kids would see and go, oh, there's an image of me here. That means a lot to me.
The Road to Pee Wee's Playhouse, an utterly brilliant TV show, is relayed by Pee Wee's alter ego in bursts of quick but clear developmental insights. The shows he watched as a kid...
I was absolutely transformed in such a strong way by so many things in early television. I wanted to jump into my TV and live in that world. My favorite kid shows were absolutely like Howdy Doody, Captain Kangaroo and the Mickey Mouse Club. His inspirations for the name Pee Wee Herman... I had a little harmonica, a little tiny harmonica this big that said Pee Wee on it. And I thought, Pee Wee.
And I knew this kid when I was little who was like this crazy, like really loud, nutty kid. And his last name was Herman. And I thought Pee-wee Herman sounds so weird. that it sounds real. It just didn't sound like a made-up name at all, like Cary Grant or like Rock Hudson or like a made-up name.
It sounded, Pee Wee Herman, like if you were making up a name, wouldn't you make up a better name than that?
And, noting the meteoric rise of Pee Wee, from an improv bit at the Groundlings to the star of his own stage show, movie, and TV series, his view of the effects of stardom on his own carefully cultivated privacy...
If I was conflicted about sexuality, fame was so much more complicated. By the time I realized that you trade in anonymity and privacy for success, the ink had dried on my pact with the devil.
All of that imploded in 1991 after an event reported by CBS anchor Dan Rather.
In Sarasota, Florida, actor Paul Rubens, better known as TV's Pee Wee Herman, is free on bail after being charged with indecent exposure in an adult movie theater. CBS announced today that, under the circumstances, the network is dropping scheduled reruns of the program Pee Wee's Playhouse.
Paul Rubens addresses all of this frankly, taking great pains to explain his point of view. Yet that's not the most compelling or illuminating part of this documentary. The part that reveals the most, especially about Paul Rubens as an artist and a person, is his constant tug-of-war with the documentary's director, Matt Wolfe.
At times, Rubens is goofing around during the interviews and being coy. Other times, he tells Wolf he doesn't trust him and would rather get his message out himself without Wolf's editorial interference. Pee-wee as himself makes clear that Paul Rubens was a control freak of sorts. And at the end, Rubens finally gets in the last word, unfiltered. It's worth hearing.
And for this HBO documentary, it's just the right coda.
Yeah.
We care about whether we're seen as a good person, whether others see us as a good person, and whether we feel like good people.
Jeff, what is this?
What I'm seeing here, at least, is that it's very high clarity.
Air Force tried Milo Radulovich without one shred of evidence and found him guilty of being a security risk without his constitutional rights.
And you, who also have not seen the evidence, are claiming he's not a security risk. Wouldn't you guess... that the people who have seen the contents of that envelope might have a better idea of what makes someone a danger to his country, or do you think it should just be you that decides?
Who are the people? Are they elected? Are they appointed? Do they have an axe to grind? Is it you, sir?

When the Star Wars prequels came out, they were polarizing. Many fans of the original trilogy hated the Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith, though many younger fans loved them then and loved them still. So we're re-watching them with fresh eyes 20 years later.

When I was three, my dad chased my mom and me and my little brother out of our trailer because he thought the government was after him. They weren't, but we ended up going to my grandmother's anyway. Actually, we made a pit stop at my mom's AA sponsor's house, but that's for a different show.
And I remember when we got there, I was really scared and confused, because I wasn't sure, are we living here now? And I remember going to my mom and telling her that I was really scared and afraid, and she gave me the best piece of advice. that I've ever received. And she said, Cole, go away. And 15 years later, I did. I moved here to New York City. I followed, yes. That was seven years ago.
And four years ago, I came on this stage and did my first star hip parade, and I sang this song. With the song Luther, Kendrick Lamar stakes his claim as that rare thing, a great hip-hop ballad singer.
Lamar samples Luther Vandross's If This World Were Mine, that's Vandross's croon you heard in the opening music, with Kendrick singing and rapping his own love lyric all around it. In the context in which this song appears on Lamar's album GNX, Luther serves as a soothing interlude, a bit of intimacy on a collection more often characterized by boasting and aggression.
The way Lamar invites SZA to join him as a singing partner here, it's obvious he's steeped in the soul music tradition of a song that was a hit five years before he was born.
If it was up to me I wouldn't Okay, now let's hear what Kendrick Lamar loved about that 1982 Luther Vandross single.
Luther is at his swooniest here, his voice pouring out a sweet syrup that swirls around Cheryl Lynn's tart, vinegary vocal. Not widely known for his duets, Vandross is at once generous and completely commanding here. When he sings the words, If this world were mine, you kind of wish God would just hand him the keys.
If this world were mine I would place at your feet all that I own. You've been so good to me. If this world were mine, I'd give The birds and the bees And your love beside me That would be all I need If this world were mine I'd give you anything
If this world were mine I would make you a king With wealth untold You could have anything If this world were mine
Kendrick Lamar's verses in Luther are about the promises he makes to a troubled woman he loves, assuring her that her life will get better with him. The author of If This World Were Mine is Marvin Gaye, whose own lyric in 1967 describes a dreamier scenario than Lamar's, as we might expect from one of the great romantics in pop history.
Where Lamar speaks of flowers of love that struggle to grow through the cracks of tough city streets, Gay creates for Tammy Terrell an easier world of bright sunshine and illuminating moonlight. The exquisite delicacy of the singing conveys the atmosphere in which such beauty can flourish.
If this world were mine, I would place at your feet All that I own, you've been so good to me. If this world were mine, I'd give you the flowers, the birds and the bees. But with your love inside me, that would be all I need. I'd give you anything.
If this world were mine, I'd make you a king.
With wealth untold, you could have anything. If this world were mine.
This duet with Tammy Turrell isn't as famous as others of theirs, such as Ain't No Mountain High Enough or You're All I Need to Get By. In fact, this song was the B-side of another hit, If I Could Build My Whole World Around You.
But listening to If This World Were Mine, you can hear why first Luther Vandross and then Kendrick Lamar wanted to make sure we never forgot the shimmering beauty of its majestic melody and its hopeful sentiment.
It's wood on the outside. Wood is coming out strong. Oh, my goodness. What a comeback as they get into the backstretch.

It was all just, hey, there's a writer's room. We're writing about bad people. Bad people do bad things. And we got to access those parts of ourselves.
I mean, we said things that nowadays, you know, would be frowned upon. We could have been mistaken for being racist, sexist, you name it-ist, you know.
We considered having an assistant in there for a while and realized we couldn't do that.
First, the bad news.

Keine Telefonnachricht, Isolation.
Something isn't right here. This isn't who I want to be. This isn't what I want. And it was like I was coming out of water.
I had this moment of clarity and I knew something wasn't right and I knew this wasn't what I wanted and I knew I needed to act fast in order to get out of that situation because I knew I'd get sucked back in.

I am for you having all the information that you need to be able to make the decision that's right for you. Because what is the right decision for you might not be the same decision that's right for me.

I love that you can just sort of take the word romance and add a different word, and it's a whole category of books. It's amazing. Exactly.
I got little shivers there with that last line.
This book did make me cry. I think it's an important read and I can understand why it got so popular on TikTok.
And brilliant, beautiful, epic, thriving, jumps off the page writing, punches you in the face, makes you reread a paragraph with tears in your eyes thinking, oh my God, that is so poignant and beautiful.
Shout out Penn Cole, this author. She was just exquisite.

And so nominations for cabinet posts are continuing to roll in. What do these picks tell us about Trump's second term?
That's all for today, Tuesday, November 26th. The Journal is a co-production of Spotify and The Wall Street Journal. Additional reporting in this episode from Ben Schwartz, Nick Timuros, Alex Leary, Peter Rudiger, and Gregory Zuckerman. Thanks for listening. See you tomorrow.
Welcome to The Journal, our show about money, business, and power. I'm Jessica Mendoza. It's Tuesday, November 26th. Coming up on the show, what Trump's pick for Treasury Secretary might signal for the U.S. economy.
What does the Treasury Secretary do?
Like Trump's last Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, Scott Besant is a longtime Wall Street investor. He started his career at Soros Fund Management, the investment firm founded by the billionaire George Soros. Soros, by the way, has been a big supporter of liberal causes and a big target of the right wing.
Back in the 90s, Besant worked with Soros' team to short the British pound, a move that led to a billion-dollar windfall. Later, Besant co-founded his own investment company called Key Square Capital Management.
Which is remarkable. It's unusual.
So what's Besant's relationship like with Trump? Do they know each other well?
I think what's very interesting about President Trump, he's been in the financial markets, through his real estate holdings. He has a deep understanding of financial markets as opposed to most politicians.
Trump promised big changes by levying tariffs, cutting taxes, and deregulating parts of the economy. Which is why, as Trump has named his cabinet picks over the past few weeks, our colleague Andrew Restuccia has been watching for one role in particular.
So Besant is a Wall Street guy. That's a check for Trump. He is somebody who has defended Trump, also a check for Trump. Is there anything else about Besant that sort of speaks to why Trump is picking him?
Like his physical appearance.
Besant seemed like a natural fit, but he wasn't the only name in the mix. There was also Howard Letnick, the CEO of a financial services company called Cantor Fitzgerald. Letnick is a close Trump ally and a strong supporter of Trump's economic plans. What did Howard Letnick bring to the table?
Lutnick had won the backing of some high-profile people in Trump's inner circle.
During his campaign, one of President-elect Donald Trump's top issues was the economy.
So what's wrong with the business-as-usual approach, according to Besson's critics? And what was it that Letnick was bringing that they felt was more desirable?
Lutnick's last-minute play for the Treasury job almost derailed Besson's nomination. And Andrew says the infighting got pretty fierce. One Trump advisor called it a knife fight.
But ultimately, Trump went with Besant. What made him come to pick him over Lutnik or any of these other folks?
How Besant might implement Trump's big economic ideas, that's next.

Okay, so Trump has nominated Scott Besson for Treasury Secretary. What do we know about Besson's plans if the Senate confirms him for the job?
Scott Besant. He's a 62-year-old hedge fund manager from South Carolina. And unlike some of Trump's other cabinet nominations, this one took some time.
Besson also pitched Trump on a plan to stimulate economic growth. And he gave the idea a catchy name, 3-3-3.
But the big thing that many people are watching for is what Besant does about tariffs. During his campaign, Trump talked a lot about tariffs.
— Trump has even said he wants to put a tariff on every import into the U.S. In a post last night on Truth Social, he said that one of his first executive orders will be to impose a 25 percent tariff on all products coming from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10 percent tariff on products from China. But remember, Besant had in the past taken a less aggressive position on tariffs.
And that was a sticking point for some inside Trump's transition team.
So it sounds like he could go either way on tariffs?
What does it say to you that Trump went with him as his treasury secretary?
Besson still needs to be confirmed by the Senate early next year. How is that process likely to go for him? Is there anything from his past maybe that might come up during confirmation hearings?
Right. And the treasury secretary is key to making his economic promises happen.

Come here. Take over, Elijah. Take over.
And over the past few days, the agency ground to a halt. The Trump administration has ordered the Commercial Financial Protection Bureau to stop working effective immediately. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is closing its headquarters this week.
Employees received an email from President Donald Trump's budget chief to stop all work.
Meantime, developing now, a manhunt is underway in the deadly shooting of United Healthcare's CEO. He was shot and killed this morning outside of a New York City hotel.
Y'all saying murderer, I'm saying freedom fighter because y'all always want to act like y'all don't see what's going on until somebody do something a little bit radical.
This was like a unifying moment for the American people. And I'm noticing that people are feeling a sense of justice being served by this modern day Robin Hood.
And then, yesterday... We begin with that breaking news out of Pennsylvania. After a six-day manhunt, a man is in custody in connection with the murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO.
Throughout his time here at Gilman, the class of 2016 has been coming up with new ideas and challenging the world around it.
It's completely out of touch. It's an insult to the intelligence of the American people. It's an experience.
Mr. Cornyn, aye. Mr. Thune, aye. Mr. Thune, aye. Mr. Scott, aye. Mr. Scott, aye. Mr. Cassidy.
And early on, after his father was killed, Kennedy sank into drug addiction.
And then he was able to climb out of that. He still attends AA meetings. And he became an environmental lawyer. And he fought for many years to clean up the Hudson River.
He taps into some very raw and real emotions of the American electorate. He also has this giant, broad appeal on a lot of these issues related to food and chronic disease. People really like what he has to say about ultra-processed foods. You know, why is it so difficult to eat healthy in America?
Mr. Chairman, the final tally is 14 ayes, 13 nays.
I'm going to let him go wild on health. I'm going to let him go wild on the food.
The first thing he's talked about doing is moving more money to research chronic disease. And he really does want to have more studies on things like autism. And I think he'll be able to move some federal money around to study those things in the way that he thinks they should be studied.
And why is it that certain ingredients are used in America but not in Europe? And those kinds of things appeal to both Democrats and Republicans, and people really get excited about that.
Most health secretaries, even if they aren't doctors or come with health policy experience, they have experience managing large organizations. And this organization has 80,000 employees, and Kennedy's never managed anything nearly that large. In addition, he has been a vocal critic of most of HHS's work over the last five years.
I mean, we've definitely never had a health secretary as critical of the health agency as Mr. Kennedy is.
Yeah. He led a nonprofit that spent millions questioning vaccines, questioning scientists about the links between vaccines and autism and other kind of theories that scientists have said are unfounded and have looked at in study after study. But Mr. Kennedy became really a powerful voice for these activists because he was already so well-known.
I got a real quick question for you. Are you a conspiracy theorist?
Please proceed, Mr. Kennedy.
Let's start with abortion. Abortion is a tricky topic for Kennedy. He really needs to allay Republican fears on that question. He needs to assure them that he isn't going to stick to his previous Democratic positions in favor of abortion rights as HHS secretary.
We should not be giving Black people the same vaccine schedule that's given to whites because
Kennedy's pitch is that he will not be anti-vaccine. He will follow the data. But when pressed by Senator Cassidy with this big group of studies, which says, hey, there's no link between autism and vaccines, Kennedy came back with a study of his own.
Mr. Kennedy, if confirmed, will have the opportunity to deliver much needed change to our nation's health care system.
Senator Cassidy, you know, politically, it's expedient for him to help President Trump with his nominees. He is up against a primary challenger in Louisiana, and he is in danger of losing his seat.
And yet he, I'm sure, is wondering, you know, if he votes for Kennedy, if he will end up regretting that, if there's an outbreak of infectious disease that is somehow related to dropping vaccination rates. You know, he said he really wants President Trump to have his nominees, but he also wonders if he'd actually be protecting President Trump's legacy more by voting against Kennedy.
Mr. Robert Kennedy is manifestly unqualified for the job he seeks.
At a rally a few months ago, Donald Trump said that he was going to allow Mr. Robert Kennedy to, quote, go wild on health. Go wild. Of all the things that I can think of that I'd like to see a secretary of health and human services do, go wild is not on the list.
I, for one, think that it is time to put a disruptor in. It is time to put somebody in there that's going to go wild.
I hope he goes wild and actually finds a way to reduce the cost of health care.
I believe he is singularly unfit to serve as HHS secretary.
We think that Senator McConnell, who came out early with a statement in support of the polio vaccine and is himself a polio survivor, is a likely no on Kennedy.
Now the Senate is trying to think, you know, we've had all these traditional guys in the past. You know, do we want this disruptor, this person who doesn't really fit the mold? Do we like that? Is that what we need to fight something like chronic disease? It's a really a big question of, you know, do we try something new?
And then if he doesn't get confirmed, you could say they decided vaccines were too important to be messed with.
One of America's biggest skeptics of public health agencies and of scientific authorities is now in charge of those institutions. And it is part of this great political reversal of people who, you know, maybe didn't pay attention to politics in the past now being activated and, you know, getting really excited about someone like Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
because of the things that he's saying about food and about vaccines and playing a role then in Donald Trump's election. This is something that the fans of Kennedy say, but I think that they are correct, that there's never really been a movement behind an HHS secretary before. It has been quite astonishing to see the Make America Healthy movement come together and fuel this political change.
So it doesn't really taste pina colada anymore. But it's good.

I love Big Bird. I actually like you, too. But I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.
The kind of money that's being wasted, and it's a very biased view. You know that better than anybody. And I'd be honored to see it end.

Talking about guns with others might not always feel comfortable, but it could save a life. Here's a way to start a conversation. Your family is going over to your neighbor's home for dinner for the first time. How would you ask if there are any unlocked guns in the home?
Hey, we're so excited for tonight. Before we come over, though, may I ask if there are any unlocked guns in your home?

Congratulations, NBA. You've killed the best studio show of all time.
Stop babying these players.
Like, I don't know how this deal got passed, but it obviously didn't go through the fans.
Because, you know, when we merged, that's the first thing our boss said. We don't need the NBA. Well, he don't need it. But the rest of the people, me, Kenny, Shaq and Ernie and the people who work there, we need it. So it just sucks right now.
Times have changed, kiddo. We gotta go back to kissing ass. Ernie Johnson here.
China is the colossus of renewable energy right now. They are not only doing it at home, they're increasingly doing it overseas. Everybody's looking to China right now.

The US represents the developed world, the rich world. China represents the developing world, or at least it has historically. And that is the big divide in the UN climate negotiations. It's developed versus developing.
the rich world would continue to provide finance for developing countries to shift away from fossil fuels and to build infrastructure that would protect these poorer countries from the effects of climate change. And that goes back to the very foundation of all these climate negotiations, which was that it is the rich world that is responsible for most of the warming.
This will be my fifth COP. The most interesting thing about them is it's a place where every country of the world almost is represented. And a lot of times people are dressed in their traditional garb. It's quite a festive and interesting place to be.
So it was the U.S. pushing China. Back then, China was still the largest emitter. They were the world's biggest coal consumer, and they were building a lot of coal-burning power plants. The U.S. was trying to convince the Chinese leadership... to at least scale that back somewhat, to change their trajectory of emissions. So the dynamic was, you know, the U.S.
was saying, we ourselves consume a lot of energy. You know, we're going to take the lead and cut our emissions. But you, China, you have to do more.
You know, this kind of going back and forth is not helpful. And people are looking to the U.S. and saying, we can't really depend on you to help us with climate action and to lead this process forward.
He wants to pump as much oil and gas as possible. He has signaled that he wants to open up more federal lands to oil and gas drilling, remove the red tape that exists that limits oil and gas drilling, perhaps environmental reviews that one might normally have to do before you start pumping oil and gas. Very little talk about renewable energy, electric vehicles.
So everybody's looking to China and the question is whether they are going to take that next step and be kind of like an official leader.
So it might not seem like it, but it's the middle of the day here in Beijing. The air is so polluted that it's darkened the sky. Pollution levels in the Chinese business capital are the highest they've been this year. The government issued what is known as a yellow alert on Monday, the third highest smog warning.
China is very good at selecting industries for development, throwing a lot of state support behind them and growing them very quickly. And the Chinese leadership became very interested in shifting away from like old manufacturing industries to new industries, the industries of the future. Yeah.
China's capacity to build renewable technologies began growing very quickly. That includes solar panels, wind turbines. It also is starting to include electric vehicles, batteries of all kinds, both for electric vehicles and also just batteries that are installed on the grid.
No, no suits. Actually, no, I'll have a few suits. No ties, though. No ties. That's where I draw the line.
Their clean energy industries were always strong and they became multiples stronger.
Yeah, as a developing country, there aren't too many explicit goals, explicit requirements for them to live up to. That's sort of a caveat to what I'm about to say. But generally speaking, they're way ahead.
So by those metrics, they're doing great. They're doing much better than people could have imagined they could have done. I mean, I think it's given hope to the idea that the worst effects of climate change can be avoided. Now, the fact is that they need to be doing a lot more if the world is going to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. So China is doing well.
They're not doing nearly enough, but the U.S. isn't doing enough either.
One of the things they point out is that it's the size of China's total emissions, not just this year, but going back all the way to the beginning of the industrial era, are getting close to the size of the emissions of a number of wealthy countries. And so they're saying, look, things are evening out.
You are such a large emitter of greenhouse gases now that you've got to take some responsibility for that, more responsibility.
So that is the task at this COP, is to set the target for post-2025 climate finance. And everybody acknowledges, including the donor countries, that the sums that are required to move the developing world to cleaner energy are huge. And people have been talking about multiple trillions of dollars a year.
The US and Europe are saying, we want you, China, to contribute to this new climate finance goal. We think you've come a long way since the first UN climate treaty was signed in 1992. China's economy has grown by, you know, with multiples and multiples. They are now the biggest manufacturer of all kinds of renewable technologies. They are the unquestioned leader in all of that.
China, you should also be providing some money through the UN climate system.
Well, I'm expecting to see the Europeans and the US and Australia and Japan make that argument. Say, China, it's time for you to contribute to some extent. China is going to resist that. And I think the big question is, are the U.S. and China going to get together for some kind of powwow that seals the deal?
Well, I think there's an ideological reason behind it. The division in the UN climate world is between developing and developed. And China and sort of the underscore there, the background is between the West and the third world or the developing world or the global South, however you want to call it. It's kind of an ideological divide.
China doesn't see itself, doesn't want to be seen as a Western country. It's a communist country. It has solidarity with other developing countries. It does hold itself up as a leader of that block of the developing countries. So I think China's leadership, they don't want to redefine themselves in that way.
The U.S. role will be diminished. The U.S. voice will be diminished. It is widely expected that Donald Trump will pull the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement for the second time. He did it during the first administration. Biden brought the U.S. back in. So that really drains the U.S. credibility in the eyes of the world.
Well, it's possible we're at an inflection point. It's possible that China's emissions have already peaked, which would be a huge victory in terms of the fight against climate change. It would send a really important signal to the rest of the world that this problem is manageable.
You've really got a lot of investment happening and all kinds of new technologies and solar and wind and clean hydrogen that are coming online online. The rest of the world is buying into it to a large extent. The progress is not fast enough, but it is happening.
Yeah, I am. I am a kind of optimistic. I think that limiting global warming to well under two degrees is possible. Even if 1.5 degrees looks really hard, I do think well under two degrees is, yeah, it's like it's within reach.
Thank you, Jess. Appreciate it. Yeah, apparently I'm told that Azeri cuisine is very good.

Losing market share to companies like Walmart, Costco, and Amazon. How big of a problem is that going to be for Target?
Welcome to The Journal, our show about money, business, and power. I'm Ryan Knudson. It's Thursday, December 5th. Coming up on the show, what's going on at Target?
Target was founded in 1962 as a big-box discount store, but it aims slightly upmarket from places like Walmart or dollar stores.
That's our colleague Sarah Nassauer, who covers retail.
Target went after customers that were slightly higher income. And it catered to their tastes with products that felt just a little fancier than what you could find elsewhere. One way the company did that was through exclusive collaborations with high-end designers.
Target has done dozens of these collaborations. Stanley cups, Missoni dresses, and Philippe Star crystalware are just a few of them.
Target's try-to-be-cool strategy worked well for decades. And during the pandemic, Target saw sales boom. But for the past couple years, it's been in a slump. Target's troubles started last year, when the company faced an inventory problem. Target had stocked up on a bunch of products that were popular during the pandemic that it suddenly couldn't sell.
And then, last summer, its yearly pride collection faced significant backlash.
Do you say Target or Target? Because that's going to tell me all I need to know.
The company has said it remains committed to supporting the LGBTQ community. Target's customers have also been complaining about the stores themselves and how the shopping experience just doesn't seem as fun as it used to. I don't know what's going on at Target these days, but this store is a disaster. I spent $47.
Lots of retailers have locked up their products to guard against shoplifting. And many still struggle with supply chains that leave products out of stock. But these problems seem to be hurting Target more. Because, remember, shopping there is supposed to be fun.
Target. Now, if you say you're going to Target, I know you're bougie, you're hip, you're with it.
For decades, Target has held a special place in the hearts of American consumers. It's not just a place to shop, it's a cool place to shop.
How is the economy playing a role in what's going on at Target?
Target's investors didn't seem to be aware of how bad the company's problems were. Until late last month, when the company reported financial results.
And so had Costco and Amazon, too. But Target...
Welcome back. Shares of Target are plunging today, having their worst day since May 2022. That's after the company posted its biggest earnings miss in two years and cut guidance.
The company said there was some good news in the results. For instance, it said the number of people visiting its stores in the last quarter increased, and that customer surveys showed people are enjoying shopping there more. Target's CEO said the company was facing some, quote, short-term headwinds, that over time, Target would turn things around. Coming up, how can Target turn things around?
After last month's earnings report, Target's CEO, Brian Cornell, said the company needed to double down on what it does well, selling affordable, slightly upmarket products.
But Sarah says that target executives have debated whether more drastic moves might be necessary.
One way they could do that is to sell more groceries. You can already buy groceries at most Target stores, things like eggs, milk, and frozen foods. But while groceries are a growing part of Target's business, it doesn't offer as much fresh produce as rivals like Walmart or traditional grocery stores.
Leaning into groceries would give shoppers a reason to go to Target more regularly, and not just for those fun splurges that can be hard to justify in tough financial times.
But recently, shopping at Target has become a lot less fun. Shoppers have been complaining about empty store shelves, more products being locked up, and long lines at checkout counters. These troubles are having an impact on Target's business. Its sales are flat, and its profits are weaker than expected. The company's stock is down more than 50% from its high three years ago.
Is it possible that we might see Target do more groceries in the short term if they think that more consumers are spending more on groceries than other stuff?
What's the fear for Target if it isn't able to get itself back on track?
Is it possible that this could be the end of Target? Yeah.
And it'll become like Tar-Lame? What would be the next?
And also it's like past success is not necessarily an indication of future success. I mean, there was a lot of great stores that didn't necessarily last. And there's always inflection points as to like whether they're gonna turn it around and continue to become great or even greater, or if it sort of marks like the beginning of a long and slow downward trajectory.
He believed that Qinggang would be able to present China's story well in Washington.
He was known as a very strict manager, very hands-on manager. You know, he would publicly scold an underling for very little mistakes. So that kind of style earned him fame. some resentment from others within the foreign ministry. And it was also well known that he has had some women issues.
You know, that's what we have heard from officials back in China. But at least, you know, back then, as long as you had the top leaders' trust, all those issues were negligible. It didn't matter. You had women issues or other issues. As long as you had the top leader's trust, you're fine.
And this is the fun part. Most of the time when he was in D.C., he couldn't even get meetings with Biden officials.
So after the promotion, people were like calling him and trying to meet with him.
Exactly. Exactly.
Based on our reporting, the foreign policy establishment in China recommended three names to the top leader, Xi Jinping, you know, who should be the next foreign minister. Chen Gang wasn't one of them. So in the end, it was really Xi Jinping himself who decided to name him foreign minister. So Xi gave him the job.
Initially, the foreign ministry was very silent on questions about his whereabouts. Then one day in July, the spokesperson at the foreign ministry basically said he was absent for quote-unquote health reasons. 秦刚国务院见外长因身体原因,难以出席此次系列外长会。 What did you think of that?
In Chinese system, health reasons are often cited for officials who have, you know, basically fallen out of favor or gone into some kind of trouble. So the health reason explanations to me did sound like a cover for something else, something more problematic.
Those high-ranking officials were told that Ching's removal from the foreign minister job was due to, quote, lifestyle issues, which basically is a common party euphemism for sexual misconduct. They were specifically told that he had affair while serving as a Chinese ambassador to the United States. And did that explanation make sense to you? Something else.
All of a sudden, you know, people kind of realized they hadn't seen Chen Gang on TV, on state media reports, anywhere. He just sort of like vanished all of a sudden from public view. He even skipped some meetings, very important international meetings. So that basically triggered a lot of speculation, especially on social media, about his whereabouts, what had happened to him.
It was such a difficult story to report out, given the fact that China doesn't have any kind of transparency or accountability to speak of.
It was very intriguing. What could have a fair possibly compromised China's national security? Turns out it all had to do with this one woman, the woman he had an affair with. Her name is Fu Xiaotian.
I was really shocked. This is a guy who was so trusted by Xi Jinping, so close to him. What could he have done wrong? That was my biggest question. What the heck did he do?
Hey, guys, I'm about to go into a meeting.
I do think we're really on the right track here. And obviously the story is extremely sensitive and we want to exercise extreme caution to make sure... I've been a reporter for the journal for 16 years. This really has been the hardest nut to crack so far.
We know from Qin Gang's official schedule that he met with Sri Lanka's foreign minister.
In 2012, Xi Jinping became General Secretary of the Communist Party and the following year, President of China.
Xi Jinping is the most powerful, the most forceful Chinese leader in recent decades. Ever since he came to power in late 2012, Xi Jinping basically has embarked on this never-ending effort to centralize power into his own hands. Xi Jinping basically made himself the chairman of everything in China.
We know he met with the Vietnamese foreign minister and that they talked about the Vietnamese prime minister's visit to China.
And Qin Gang also met with a representative from Russia, one of China's key partners. Russia's deputy foreign minister, Andrei Rudenko, was in town that day.
That appointment in 2021 was quite a surprise decision. That's our colleague Lingling again. Qinggang didn't have much of a U.S. experience, and the thinking was, based on officials familiar with the matter, the reason why Xi Jinping picked him for such an important job was mostly because Xi Jinping really trusted him.
Welcome to The Journal, our show about money, business, and power. I'm Jessica Mendoza. It's Monday, January 27th. Coming up on the show, Trump is unwinding DEI programs and it's reshaping corporate America. DEI can elicit some strong opinions. I asked our colleague Chip Cutter to unpack the concept for me. How would you define the term?
Yeah, well, DEI is really kind of an umbrella term for policies designed to create more opportunities for minorities or underrepresented groups and to make sure that women could advance in corporate America.
And advocates of DEI programs have long said that efforts like unconscious bias training or recruiting from historically black colleges and universities, they're all intended to make personnel decisions more meritocratic by ensuring that someone's identity doesn't end up holding them back.
And so just to be clear, the argument is that this is going to make the system more merit-based because it opens doors for people who have historically been marginalized.
That's exactly right. I mean, it's the idea that there are bias in all sorts of decisions and that these DEI programs are meant to create an environment where people can feel included, that they can sort of all have equal chances to succeed.
The counterargument is that these programs, first off, have never been that effective and that they've been discriminatory. The critics of DEI say that programs, for example, targeting a certain number of black employees in management ranks by 2025, for example, would be discriminatory against other races.
So these critics are saying that DEI programs and policies actually make systems less meritocratic and that it favors certain groups over others.
That's right. And so they claim that the goals of DEI program are actually having an inverse result, that they are discriminating against groups of people, notably white men.
While widespread use of the term DEI is relatively new, the concept actually builds on ideas that go back decades.
Well, it really dates back to the civil rights movement. And so affirmative action and equal employment laws were enacted in the middle of the 1960s. Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 signed legislation making it illegal for federal contractors, for example, to discriminate based on race.
DEI programs are meant to help underrepresented groups at work and in school. And not long ago, DEI policies seemed to be everywhere. Lately, though, DEI looks more like an endangered species.
And so during the 60s, you saw companies starting to develop some of the first diversity training programs. And then for decades, you saw companies continuing to do more and more of this work.
At schools, in government and nonprofits, and in the corporate world, these policies focused on recruiting people across races and genders. And for years, affirmative action saw broad bipartisan support.
and a real reckoning with how companies think about race at work and how DEI programs should be approached. And I think a lot of the DEI programs were sort of built on the backs of affirmative action.
What is the difference between affirmative action and DEI?
They're similar concepts, but there are some differences. Affirmative action was really meant to ensure that discrimination was not taking place and to do whatever was necessary to sort of correct for that and make sure it wasn't happening. DEI is broader.
DEI programs aim to promote opportunities for women, veterans, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people, and other historically underrepresented groups. It also often includes things like unconscious bias training, conversations around structural inequalities, and workshops on inclusive language.
And as companies, schools, and government agencies embrace these policies, they hired people to help implement them. So post 2020, post George Floyd, one of the things that happened was the rise of the chief diversity officer across companies. How important was this job?
Well, it really became one of the hottest jobs in corporate America. companies just started scrambling to hire chief diversity officers.
He hired a chief diversity officer. They hired a chief diversity officer, an inclusion officer. There was some interesting stats that in 2018, less than half the companies in the S&P 500 employed someone in the role. And by 2022, three out of four companies had created a chief diversity officer position. And that was according to a study from Russell Reynolds, an executive search firm.
Donald Trump is on the hunt, and he is using every tool that he can to try to really, finally kill DEI.
So you really saw companies just going out of their way to hire chief diversity officers.
The enthusiasm didn't last. Progress on boosting representation was often mixed. Measuring something like unconscious bias is hard to do. And some of the mandatory training was just unpopular.
A company might mandate that all employees take an anti-bias training, but employees actually sort of roll their eyes about it and try to just click through it and complete it as soon as possible.
There was also a feeling among people who supported DEI goals that a lot of corporate efforts were just for show. Soon, newly hired chief diversity officers were leaving companies in droves. Some told the Wall Street Journal they were skeptical that their bosses wanted real change. And then a big blow to the movement came in 2023.
Now to the landmark ruling from the US Supreme Court today striking down affirmative action.
For years, President Donald Trump has taken aim at diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI.
The Supreme Court's decision really opened the floodgates and it created an environment where Critics of these programs felt emboldened. Conservative legal activists started filing lawsuits against companies and programs that, for example, were aimed at promoting more women and minorities or giving grants to certain groups.
The ruling cast a chilling effect on corporate America, with a number of major companies pulling back on their DEI efforts. But others are holding firm. That's after the break. In his first few days in office, Trump wasted no time dismantling DEI initiatives within the federal government. So could you kind of dive into that for us more specifically?
— The Trump administration seems to be doing everything it can in its powers to enact sweeping changes in the ways that companies and organizations operate. And it wants to just end what it sees as policies that the Trump administration feels have been discriminatory towards white people.
What actions has Trump and his administration taken so far to undo DEI?
Well, it's a lot. So he ordered an end to DEI programs across federal agencies. All staff working on those programs were put on paid leave. You saw the Agriculture Department, the Treasury Department, the Labor Department remove some web pages on diversity by Wednesday morning. Notably, the Labor Department, for example, had a page on the history of DEI. That is down now.
The Trump administration also set up a tip line to report DEI initiatives across the federal government and its contractors. It told employees there would be, quote, adverse consequences for failing to report colleagues. The administration also instructed federal institutions to investigate DEI programs at schools with endowments of more than a billion dollars.
And Trump revoked the executive order signed by former President Lyndon B. Johnson six decades ago, the one that required government contractors to proactively root out discrimination on the basis of race and gender. But the new administration isn't just going after DEI efforts in government.
Trump also instructed each government agency to identify the most egregious and discriminatory DEI practitioners among companies, nonprofits, foundations, and other private sector organizations. And Trump recommended that these agencies recommend up to nine targets for potential civil investigation.
Here he is telling agencies to look far beyond the government and to look into corporate America and to see what's happening there and what might need to be corrected. This is what freaks companies out.
— Civil rights groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center have strongly condemned Trump's actions. It's expected there will be litigation challenging the administration's efforts. In the last few months, some major companies have publicly pulled back from DEI.
So let's just like give some examples. Ford said it would stop providing workplace data to a gay rights lobbying group. UBS stopped giving out $25,000 grants directed at businesses led by women of color. Walmart said it wouldn't renew funding for a charity it created to address racial disparities.
— Which is why, as he starts his second term, Trump is rolling out a series of actions cracking down on DEI. And corporations are watching, many are already ditching their DEI programs.
And there's more. Meta ended representation goals for women and ethnic minorities and eliminated the company's DEI team. McDonald's said it would end diversity goals for its senior leadership and stop a program that encourages diversity training among its suppliers. And Target will end its three-year DEI goals. There are holdouts.
Last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the head of one of America's biggest banks talked about the administration's actions on DEI.
So Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, is asked about how he plans to respond to attacks on DEI and what his message is on DEI.
And he actually comes out pretty strong in defending it and saying he isn't going to just stop what the bank has been doing to promote a more equal and diverse workforce.
And Jamie Dimon essentially says... Bring them on. Bring them on.
And is Jamie Dimon on his own here? Or are we seeing other private companies sort of resisting anti-DEI pressures as well?
One company that has really defended DEI is Costco.
Costco shareholders rejected a proposal from a conservative think tank to report on the potential risks of the company's diversity initiatives.
Costco, for example, was the target of a shareholder proposal questioning its DEI efforts. And they really stood firm and said that they see DEI as important to the company. They think it's important for their employee base. It reflects their diverse range of customers. And I think what Costco did ended up setting a new template for corporate America because companies are often followers.
They see one company hold firm and they realize, oh, we now have a model for how to respond. You know, I was at a breakfast with a bunch of HR leaders, and they were all talking about it. They were saying, we couldn't believe what Costco did, that that actually is really interesting. Perhaps this is sort of a new way that companies could hold off these DEI pressures.
They didn't get too much blowback on it. And so I think you might see other companies try to follow in a similar vein.
Some that have stood their ground on DEI efforts include Apple. The company's board has urged shareholders to reject a proposal from a conservative think tank targeting DEI policies. And earlier this month, the CEO of United Airlines told investors in a call that a diverse workforce was still achievable.
The headline is the Trump administration and how its crackdown on DEI is rippling through companies. This is what HR executives and CEOs are thinking about. It's what lawyers are talking about. For my world, writing about big companies, this is the issue of the moment.
Well, we do hire on merit. We can hire the absolute best of the best and have a naturally diverse workforce. So at United, we can do both.
Trump's war on DEI is just beginning. Today, he's expected to sign an executive order removing DEI programs from the military. Who is most likely to be affected by this reversal?
Yeah, I mean, I think it's the people most likely to be affected are people of color, people from underrepresented groups. I mean, I think there are underrepresented groups now who worry, is that all going to go away? Are we going to be back to sort of an environment where... We feel like we do have fewer chances to succeed in corporate America.
And I think the bigger concern is what does this look like for underrepresented groups who now worry that there are fewer people who care about what their future looks like inside these big organizations.
One thing Chip says could happen is that some of the ideas of DEI could live on in the corporate world, but without the label.
And so I think it's just, there's a bigger question about how do companies operate going forward? How do these goals get interpreted in new ways? Diversity can take a lot of forms. I think you might see DEI programs morph where they focus more on diversity
veterans, for example, or people with disabilities, or you think more about geographic diversity and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. And so I think you might see more of a focus on other groups now, but I think it kind of remains to be seen how exactly DEI changes.
That's all for today, Monday, January 27th. The Journal is a co-production of Spotify and The Wall Street Journal. Additional reporting in this episode from Lauren Weber and Teping Chen. Thanks for listening. See you tomorrow.
I love that you can just sort of take the word romance and add a different word, and it's a whole category of books. It's amazing.
I just finished the first book in the Kindred Curse Saga, The Spark of the Everflame, and it was absolute perfection.
I was so obsessed and binged it so quickly within like a day and a half that I am currently charging my Kindle so that I can read the second part.
I can't for the life of me remember which one of my mutuals read and raved about this book, but whoever you are, I love you.
I mean, yeah, it's like it really is a fine art. And I think the oversaturation risks alienating people, but I also think you run the risk of overhyping and then they're causing a backlash, right? It's this really kind of like emotional exchange between the marketing department and the public, right?
Yeah, I just have this image of like this ruthless corporate machine, like grinding into gear, like here comes Wicked, which is such a funny thing to think about. And it is the kind of flood the zone campaign that really is kind of willed into being by Hollywood today.
I think what it says about Hollywood is whenever you see Wicked on the subway or you see Wicked at an NFL game or you see Wicked on the shelves at Target, like part of it looks really impressive, right? Like this is really a sign of what a company can do whenever it sort of focuses its energy.
And I don't think it's actually, it's not lost on me that we're talking about a movie that is a retelling of The Wizard of Oz, which more than maybe any movie ever embodies the Hollywood golden age of Hollywood having this kind of cultural dominance, this saturation, this kind of global appeal. And... I think in the context of Hollywood, there's another angle where it looks like a last grasp.
And it looks like it is exhausting itself to try and have a monopoly on our attention.
I think if it fails, it is not good news for those of us who want to go see musicals.
Remember that line about just short of obnoxious?
I think that's the line, is podcast guests singing the Wicked cast recording.
I mean, you really could spend like every hour of the day consuming some kind of Wicked promotion. It really is turning what is, by definition, a movie into some kind of lifestyle statement.
Thanks for watching!
I think when I was probably about like 16 or 17, I went to this summer camp and there was a kid there who told me about this new Broadway show that he was obsessed with, Wicked. So when I went home, I had recently gotten my driver's license and I drove my Hyundai Elantra to the Best Buy to buy the cast recording. I remember listening to it in my car nonstop.
How many times do you think I've listened to this soundtrack? Well, see, I'm going to assume zero because one thing that I have found reporting this story is that for as many of us like me who know so much about this show and have seen it multiple times, there's this whole other part of the globe that has just like totally sat this one out.
Which is a funny thing to imagine for someone like me who is almost like, feels like I'm seeing something I know so well. Do you have a favorite song? Oh, it's probably Dancing Through Life, which is this big like six and a half minute song about putting your cares aside and dancing through life, Ryan. You're going to have to sing Dancing Through Life because I don't know what it sounds like.
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. I wasn't born yesterday. Never in a million years. No, I know how these work.
The author, Gregory Maguire, had this idea of retelling The Wizard of Oz, but in a way that takes place largely before the film and the book, but also recasts characters that we know well. So in this retelling, the Wicked Witch is not a villain. And it tells the story of the Wicked Witch as a young woman at school where she meets Glinda the Good Witch. And it's about their friendship.
It started officially with the movie's stars appearing at the Super Bowl, which was now nine months ago.
And was it a hit from the start? No, it wasn't. It was actually a very dicey proposition because it had a budget of $14 million, which in Hollywood is a quaint indie, but on Broadway is a massive investment. And then there were some critics who thought that it relied too heavily on the stagecraft. Like there's a lot of special effects. I mean, Act One ends with
Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, like several feet above the stage because she's flying. She's defying gravity, so to speak. She sings the song and at a climactic moment, she ends like high above the stage. And when I went to see Wicked in late September, I had dinner that night with a friend who produces Broadway shows.
And I said to him, I said, I wonder if I went to an early reading of Wicked, if I would have thought this show is going to be a blockbuster. Because it doesn't seem on the surface like it should work as well as it does. And my friend said, well, you might have just because the songs are so good. The songs are, in his view, the songs are significantly better than your average Broadway show.
They stick with you. They kind of have a way of, like a good pop song, kind of becoming this recurring refrain in your life. And you sort of want to be like, I'm dancing through life.
And there's just been this steady drumbeat of wicked promotion since then. There was a ton of references to it at the Summer Olympics.
I'm not doing it, Brian.
We're everywhere. And we find each other. You know, it's interesting, when I was working on this story, I found that the fans of Wicked really behave in a way that I think we've always associated with fans of like superhero comics. And as the show has developed a kind of lore of its own, fans have followed that lore.
So there are, you know, dozens of women who have played these two lead roles who fans will compare performances of. and see what they're doing differently and how they're interpreting it differently. It's really become kind of a living document.
Well, on one hand, making a movie feels like an obvious choice because if it's a huge hit on Broadway, and even if just a fraction of the people who see it on Broadway go to see it in theaters, you might have a hit. But there are a couple considerations they had to keep in mind.
One is cannibalizing the show and worrying about rushing out a movie too quickly whenever you're still making so much money on ticket sales for the live show. And then the other is that they knew that doing it with the wrong cast or doing it in a ham-handed way could just hurt the property overall.
When you have this core group of really passionate fans, you need to make sure that they're kept happy. Because if they sour on the film, it can kind of contaminate the whole pool of opinion.
The Today Show had Wicked interviews.
I talked to the chief content officer at NBCUniversal, and she said to me, you know, she's been at the studio for more than 20 years, and that entire time she has thought about when is the right time to make a Wicked movie.

Breaking news. They just announced that Ariana Grande is going to play Glinda and Cynthia Erivo is going to play Elphaba in the new Wicked movie. Let's talk about it. Ariana posted her reaction and goes, thank goodness. Her co-star Cynthia, who's playing Elphaba, sent her flowers and goes, pink goes good with green. Honestly, not that surprised about Elphaba because first of all, her vocals.
And they have a line of clothes at Target.
And then the production started, and the production sounds like it was just this absolute gargantuan undertaking. At one point, they planted nine million tulips in a field. Nine million tulips? I know. It's not even mentioned in the show, but I guess they wanted it to look as fulsome as possible.
Yeah, I don't have a number, but I can definitely say it's not news that a big budget movie is going to have a massive marketing campaign because these studios need to try and make a return on their investment. But even by those standards, the Wicked campaign is giant.
We're in a moment right now where the moviegoer who might have seen four or five films a year before COVID is now more likely to see two or three. There is just a finite amount of time that we give to certain pieces of pop culture. And the movies have taken a significant hit on that front, been replaced by whether it's Netflix or TikTok or what have you. And so...
There's no place like Target to shop everything Wicked.
Movies, which, I mean, for much of the 20th century enjoyed an easy cultural dominance, now have to really fight for that dominance. And when you have a movie with a budget like Wicked, an investment like Wicked, you need a lot of people to decide, I'm going to get up off the couch. I'm going to hire a babysitter. I'm going to drive to the theater and I'm going to go see this movie.
And the movies compete with so much else out there for our pop culture time. An all out campaign or some would say assault is what you need to do to really capture the zeitgeist today.
I mean, they're selling drinks at Starbucks. They're selling nail polish. They're selling dolls. They have Santa at Bloomingdale's wearing a green suit rather than a red one. Santa's in on it too? I know, I know. I was like shocked. Everything that you can imagine that could be wickified is being wickified. Yeah.
That's why across the Comcast empire, and this really, I think, speaks to the reach of the modern entertainment conglomerate. That's why you can see some kind of wicked presence everywhere from the Today Show to SNL, obviously both NBC shows, but also see it at the Thanksgiving Day Parade at the end of this month. You can also see it in the ads.
Like anything that Comcast touches is basically thinking, What can we do to help push Wicked?
It's a great question. I mean, I think you want to make sure that you try to make the tent as big as possible. And I think that's one challenge that this movie has is that there are people, I'm told, who will just not ever see a musical. There are just like giant chunks of the movie going population that they're going to have trouble getting. So they need to make the tent as big as possible.
I also think it's about just sort of whipping those fans into a frenzy. And I think the wicked fandom that has been sort of serviced now over the past year by this massive campaign is just helping to amplify all of that.
excitement and and energy and then i think it also like to your question about the bottom line it also helps make sure that maybe they organize a big outing with 10 friends to go see it on opening night maybe they take it to that next level where they they're buying more tickets they're seeing it two or three or four times are there any risks with this flooding the zone strategy Oh, yeah.
I mean, I think, I mean, the biggest risk is just like everyone's saying enough already. And the head of marketing at Universal gave this presentation that I was at where he said, we're going to be just short of obnoxious.
And if they're still a little nervous, then the houses are going to have to be really careful about where they price things.
And you sort of make your way finally to this huge room that has, you can see it, around 600 or 700 people. And it was pretty packed. There it is. I'm sitting there watching it, and I actually pulled out my phone and started Instagram-living. Hey, guys, I'm here outside of these.
Yeah, it's kind of the art world's version of the Super Bowl. The world's biggest auction houses roll out a series of sales that happen every night of the week. And for years, this has sort of served as a public reckoning moment to reassess price levels for hundreds of the world's most expensive artists.
The collective gasp that came out of these 600 mouths in the room was so audible that it was really startling.
Every runner knows this moment when it just clicks. When your legs just follow, the pain leaves, the doubts are gone and you only feel the runner's high. That's the reason why you get up so early. Why a little rain doesn't stop you. Why running becomes a ritual. So run and feel the runner's high. Go wild and learn more about running at puma.de.
So what you're seeing is it kind of depends on where you're standing. Like from the side, you're going to see a pretty gnarly, knobby portrait of a guy with spiky hair and big ears and his mouth is sort of slightly opened and he has a collar and it's just really his head and shoulders in a bust. What's interesting is if you stand in front of it, it becomes kind of knife edge.
Art really did change irrevocably after World War II. You just couldn't make pretty things. I mean, you see it in painting, too, all these Jackson Pollock abstracts. Like, the whole world just sort of exploded, and the artists are trying to figure out, how do we come back to art and make it matter differently? And so he sort of is known for creating these haunting figures
I feel like when I look at the bust de Diego, I'm feeling human. There's something which is like he's nearly touching my soul.
Did you see the video that Sotheby's posted about this bust heading into the auction?
I mean, the marketing's pretty spectacular, right? This is substantial, monumental.
It has a mystical presence or a divine presence.
They do a pretty good job of making these things seem like, you know, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's their job. That's why people bring things to auction rather than just take it to a dealer and sell it privately.
Zola was a famous collector, and his son believes that his dad had really good taste. And so what that has created is a scenario where, you know, they're pretty sure what the work is worth, and they're not known to budge on that, right? So I don't think Sotheby's had a lot of options. The bust would hit the auction block without a guarantor. To go up naked is what we say in auction parlance.
It's very rare for a work, I think, at this price anymore to come to market naked, which, to be honest, was really refreshing for someone like me who likes to sort of see, like, you know. Because it's a true test. Yeah, it's a true test of sort of how the market is and where the price, you know, should be and could be.
Now, for a minute, that seems like a good deal because the folks who knew Giacometti knew that other pieces of his, you know, had sold for far more, like over $100 million. He doesn't have a bidder yet.
He finally comes up to about $64 million, and then the room just hushes. Like, people who had brought out their cell phones at first, just to sort of catalog the thing, just like I was doing, they start, like, putting their phones down, which is never a good sign. And people start looking around at each other. Like, it gets, like... Awkward? Silent.
The room has gotten very quiet.
He's sort of stalling it at 64.2.
He just needs one bed.
So heading into last week, all eyes were on this Alberto Giacometti sculpture, a bronze bust of the artist's younger brother, Diego. It kind of came in with the highest estimate of the week at around $70 million.
They can't do it. Everyone's sort of waiting with bated breath for one of them to take the bait. And then, four minutes later, they didn't. And then when the hammer, you know, came down, the collective gasp that came out of these 600 mouths in the room was so audible that it was really startling.
Well, immediately my heart starts racing, right? Because, you know, I've been covering the art market for 20 odd years. I mean, I have to go back to like 2008 to remember a piece that sold at this level, you know, this badly or that didn't sell right at this level, this badly.
The art market is an alternative asset, just like real estate, you know, and it tells us how wealthy people spend their money. And you kind of want to see how the world's wealthiest people who are arguably more insulated than the rest of us, how confident or wary are they of to go big or go home, you know, when it comes to these artworks that are over $30 million, over $50 million.
It's a very small pool of people to begin with, but you can glean a lot about how they feel about the overall market's health by seeing how willing they are to go shopping.
We talked to you not long ago in December about this banana taped to the wall that sold for $6 million.
The banana at the grocery store costs about 30 cents. This one just sold for $6.2 million. The cryptocurrency entrepreneur paid more than $6 million for this piece at an art auction last night. And it's...
I'm not sure if it was a red herring or if it was just like the great sort of theater, right? You know, it went viral from the moment it was taped up to the wall at the fair. It had a whole backstory that this generation of collectors and young people and folks on Instagram, you know, were dressing as this banana for Halloween. It sort of had this pop culture breakthrough.
You know, I just think you really have to capture a different level of attention to burst through
We could look at how Wall Street was doing, you know, at the end of last year versus, you know, how it was doing three months ago when a lot of this property was getting gathered for the sale as opposed to how it's doing now, right?
Very different kind of mood about the economy.
Yeah, very roller coaster, very volatile, and the tariffs are a factor. And so all these little factors can affect a collector sitting in the room or sitting on their computer watching something sell. What makes them push the button and what makes them not?
It's this soaring tall building built to sort of feel like a luxury shopping mall, if you will. There's escalators that run right up the middle with galleries ringing each floor. And so you kind of go up these series of escalators and... There's polite women greeting you at every floor. And everyone's in pinstripe suits and, you know, nice dresses.
People did buy things. They weren't buying things really for more than $16 million, but they were. And sort of some fluky things sort of did very well. You know, this Frank Lloyd Wright desk lamp was estimated to sell for $3 to $5 million, and the thing sold for like $7.5 million, like a record for Frank Lloyd Wright at auction.
Yes, there are some taste changes and every market cycles differently, but little truths sort of emerge from each one. And this one, it's going to sound so overly simplistic, but beautiful things sold really well this season. That seems like a no-brainer.
But... But in fact, a few years ago when conceptual art was all the rage and when sort of snarky, cynical, like, you know, if you don't get the joke of the banana, right? Like you don't understand it. Like there was a time very recently when calling something beautiful or, and dealer parlance, calling it decorative was really a slam.
Like, ooh, that's a decorative piece, meaning that it was pretty. It wasn't tough. It didn't have some political bite. This week, we really saw really beautiful things sell well. I asked some folks about this and they basically just said like, You know, when real life is tough, you know, collecting is meant to be an escape.
Yeah, it's meant to be a respite. And it's not a moment where people really want to be challenged with the toughness of art. They really want to be consoled by the beauty of it. And so this is why perhaps the Giacometti, which reminds us of the angst and the existential crises that followed World War II, maybe it just didn't have that moment.
So they get it back. They may just take a breath and make sure that, you know, the vultures don't sort of scoop it up at a bargain basement prices. It's known as burning the work, right? So you've put this work up to the world to say, I think I want to get this price.
And when everyone watches it not get that price, like there's no shot you're ever going to get anything close to that price for a very long time. You sort of burn the work. Yeah, you're sunk. And so at the very least, you're knocking probably 20 million off this work.
I don't think they're gonna move past it quickly, no. What auctioneers want is for everyone to feel safe and okay buying art. That's what sellers want so that they can get a good bang for their buck. That's what estates want so they can offload things. But honestly, collectors, you know, with the paddles, make the call.
And I didn't even get that much. I don't even understand. I literally, I literally don't understand. $41 on three items at a small town grocery store. So you're supposed to spend $300 to $400 to $500 a week just to feed your family now?
I think if you go to any grocery store right now, the inflation and just the price of everything is just exorbitant.
I have a family of four, and it's just been wild to watch the bill rack up, you know, in the past couple of years. It feels like a major investment every time we go to the grocery store these days.
They are bringing in thousands and thousands and thousands of products from thousands of different manufacturers, big and small. And they are then curating a truckload of all of these different products to bring to a grocery store.
Exactly. And if you are smaller or more niche, you are not going to have your own trucks. So you rely on a third party to do that work for you.
And it's this part of the supply chain that happens to be characterized by these really sort of Byzantine rules and conventions that involve fees and charges, and they can really rack up. And so this is this other piece of the inflation story that is particularly the case for a lot of the smaller brands that you might be putting in your grocery cart.
And where the rub is, is that sometime in the future, you're going to receive a payment from your distributor. And there will be dozens and often dozens and dozens of deductions that are taken off. And these are just sort of like a long string of numbers, you know, that are attached to your check stub. And they will be minus numbers. And this is where a lot of the tension and conflict comes in.
You know, consolidation in the distribution industry is part of this story. You know, the distributors, they themselves operate on incredibly thin profit margins. These are not companies that are just racking it up. And so they have had to, you know, they have consolidated over time in order to stay afloat. themselves.
And that just means that there aren't very many national distributors for brands to choose from.
And distributors will say, you know, look, these brands would not have access to stores nationally if it weren't for us. And I think it's true that, you know, a lot of these smaller brands, they can be naive about just what it costs to really start distributing your product nationwide. Who says that they're naive? So distributors will say that the smaller brands...
You know, they can be, they're run by these great entrepreneurs, great creators with a great idea for a food product, but that, you know, they don't fully understand what they're taking on. What it is to be in the big leagues. Exactly. You know, Kehi told me that something like 87% of small brands fail. You know, there's just huge churn.
And I think small brands would say a big part of their struggle is with distributors. And the distributors will say, hey, a lot of the problem is grocery. So there's, you know, there's a lot of finger pointing within the industry.
So what are the grocers saying? It's well known, you know, within the industry that grocers charge a lot of their own fees. It's pretty well known even to brands that if you deliver your pallet of goods late or if you deliver it and it's not everything the grocer asked for, you will get dinged by your grocer.
But what manufacturers say is that the fees, the charges have gotten way more extreme over time. to the point of being an existential threat for a lot of smaller brands. Who wins? Well, the way I really see this is as a result of this struggle in the American grocery business for profit.
You have packaged food manufacturers, you've got distributors, you've got grocers, and they're all fighting for pretty limited profit margins. But it's just really a sort of a tug of war between these factions to make it work.
People know that something's not right. And people know that this health issue is the tip of the iceberg.
The Make America Healthy Again movement is the strongest movement in America because it contains moms.
Talking about guns with others might not always feel comfortable, but it could save a life. Here's a way to start a conversation. Your family is going over to your neighbor's home for dinner for the first time. How would you ask if there are any unlocked guns in the home?

Our guns are stored securely, locked in a safe that the kids can't access.

He can't see the aircraft.
You can see some flowers and notes and earlier this morning we did see a woman come by and she left this note on the table. It offers up some prayers for the families who are affected and praying for the light of God to shine upon them. Now she
They put a big push to put diversity into the FAA's program. Then another article, the Federal Aviation Administration, this was before I got to office, recently, second term. The FAA is actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities.
He's also announcing 10% at least tariffs on all countries.
I think they started asking that question fairly quickly. And the question that they focused on was whether he had the full reach of the Constitution to be allowed to make these sweeping tariffs.
And he said that I can impose these sweeping tariffs like on basically every nation in the world because there's this emergency happening where the U.S. has a trade deficit and it's affecting our supply chain. It's affecting our domestic manufacturing and it's affecting our military.
You know what? I had not heard of it until these tariffs and potential legal challenges to them started percolating. A trade lawyer I spoke to about this court said that, you know, most people graduating law school had probably never heard of it.
Chronic trade deficits are no longer merely an economic problem. They're a national emergency that threatens our security.
It was brand new. This law had never been used in this way before. No previous president had ever tried to impose tariffs under AIPA.
There was five in total, including a New York-based wine importer. There was a fishing tackle retailer in Pennsylvania. There was a women's cycling apparel brand based in Vermont, a Utah manufacturer of plastic pipes, and a company called MicroKits, which was a Virginia-based maker of educational electronic kits.
Yes, you're right. And they chose those five because I think all those five businesses, they had stuff that they were importing from like over 30 different countries around the world.
So they could cover their ground. That's right. Yes.
The plaintiffs argued that this law, that Trump's use of AIPA, had never been used before by any other president. It was the first time that any president had ever said that, oh, I can impose tariffs on another country based on this emergency that I believe is happening. They said that the IEPA does not grant any kind of ability for the president to impose tariffs.
That's the job of Congress, and Congress created this law, and they argued that there was no language in that law that said that Trump had the ability to impose tariffs.
The plaintiff's argument was that this wasn't an emergency, there's been a trade deficit for decades, and this definitely wasn't some unusual and extraordinary threat.
The government argued that this was an emergency, that in the last five years the trade deficit had ballooned, and that cumulatively this was affecting domestic manufacturing and was affecting our military supply chain.
The main argument for the Justice Department was that Trump had this power to unilaterally impose these tariffs and that the court had a very limited role in even reviewing his use of that authority. They said that the court didn't have any right to decide whether or not Trump's emergency was a real emergency or not. And that was something that was left up for him to decide and that Congress,
could potentially review his actions, but it wasn't the court's role.
This court has national jurisdiction. So that means that, you know, it can hear cases all over the country involving any kind of trade dispute. And when they issue a decision, it can affect everything.
It's a hard argument to make. And, you know, I think even during some of the hearings, they were very skeptical of that argument and were even wondering aloud, like, well, what role should the court have? The judges were also a little skeptical about, you know, how do you measure what is a national emergency?
And, you know, one of the judges, I think maybe she did it in a tongue-in-cheek kind of manner, she posed this scenario. What about if there was this shortage of peanut butter? So she wanted to know, like, where the president's— Yeah, what's the line between, you know, a national emergency and just, you know, some kind of inconvenience to some people?
And I think a lot of legal experts feel like this case is eventually going to end up in the Supreme Court and will be decided there. I would say it has the potential to be a big loss for Trump.
Tonight, a three-judge panel ruling that the emergency declared by President Trump to impose those sweeping tariffs, quote, exceeds any tariff authority delegated to the president.
The trade court ruling is a big deal. That's a big deal. If this ruling stands, then Trump will have to find a new way to impose tariffs. He wouldn't be able to declare a national emergency and then enact these broad levies around the world.
Argentina, bedraggled, ragged, desperate, and with real, real work to do.
And now Argentina are staring at major, major problems.
And now to our other breaking story. Overnight, we've learned that an American journalist with The Wall Street Journal has now been arrested in Russia on spying charges.
A Russian foreign ministry spokesperson said they believe Evan Gershkovich was conducting activities not related to journalism. The Wall Street Journal denies the allegations against him and is demanding his immediate release.
They're doing interviews, they're on TV.
It's been almost two years...
Near the end of the interview, Anna says her daughter is already musing about her new identity.
Anna says her daughter would like to be a spy, to devote her life to serving Russia, just like her mother.

Matt, what are you hoping for right now?
How on earth are y'all affording daycare?
This November, it will be up to Travis County voters to decide whether or not to approve a proposal aimed at making childcare more affordable.
I had somebody tell me $550 a week for a kid. Are you insane?
There is a market mismatch because childcare is unaffordable for families and it's also not hugely profitable for businesses. And childcare educators themselves don't make particularly high wages at all. And it's hard for businesses to pay them more because they would have to pass on those costs to parents who are already struggling to pay for daycare in the first place in many cases.
The Labour Department has done some research into the cost of childcare. And it really depends on where you live. If you live in a big city, it's probably going to be more expensive than somewhere smaller. But it could be $17,000 a year. For a lot of people, their daycare bill is the same as their mortgage every month.
So if you have more than one kid who's not in school yet, that is very expensive.
One thing that's interesting is that in places like Austin, paying for a year of child care is now more expensive than paying for a year of in-state college tuition. But the very different thing between paying for your child's college and paying for your child's daycare is that you have the best part of two decades to prepare for college.
Well, one of the people who I spoke to described childcare as a broken business model because childcare is extremely expensive for parents to pay. At the same time, childcare does not make a lot of money. And the reason for that is because it is so labor intensive and they have to pay staff. You know, you can't get an algorithm to put a toddler down for a nap or change a diaper remotely.
Well, often one person, you know, if it's two parents, one of them will stop working. And for some people, that's a choice and they want to be at home with their kids and that's great. But for other people, it is not. They leave the workforce because they can't find reliable childcare that they can afford.
And for the economy as a whole, what this means is that it just means that fewer people are available in the labor force or they can't take the jobs that they want. You know, they might not be able to take certain hours. They might not be able to take a promotion. So it can hinder people's ability to work.
The economy's growth potential depends on the supply of workers. You need people to perform jobs that move the economy forward.
3.000 Action-Filialen in Europe and we celebrate with extremely low prices. For example, our Superfin Waschmittelpots, 18 pieces, only 2,99. And our Spectrum Sprühfarbe for perfect coverage, only 2,33. For even more extremely low prices, visit our stores or check out the Action app. Small prices, great fun.
Notably, one proposition has to do with child care. Voters will decide whether to approve spending money to make it more affordable.
Proposition A is a ballot initiative to increase property taxes. You know, that money would be used to fund affordable daycare by creating several thousand new spots in daycares and also expanding after school programs. And the idea is that this money, it's for lower income households and it will help people to reenter the workforce faster.
It means that they will receive more funding. That will allow them to hire more staff, potentially raise wages, and hopefully get more kids in the door because the subsidies will help low-income families. It'll be producing the money that will pay for their care. So I think for daycare owners, it is definitely a good thing.
You need people to be in person. My name is Harriet Torrey and I cover the U.S. economy. So why are you writing about child care? I think it's an overlooked aspect of the U.S. economy because so many people struggle with child care. This is not something new that the economy is suddenly facing. And this is something that really underpins the U.S. economy in so many ways.
You know, property taxes, it's death by a thousand cuts. Are they going to ask us in a couple of years for another tax increase to subsidize groceries? Another tax increase to subsidize rent?
I think just the fact that this is being taken to the people to decide. Austin is an interesting city. It has seen a lot of growth in recent years, but at the same time, it has seen a big jump in the cost of living. So people who don't have kids might be thinking, why should I support this measure? Why is this my problem?
But I think a lot of people realize that the more people that are able to work, the better it is for the economy overall. And in order for the city to remain a magnet and for Businesses to move there, they do need to have reliable childcare in place.
If these pass... It will be an acknowledgement that this is an issue that needs action, that communities need to kind of come together and do something about, because it is a real problem in a lot of places, and we've seen that.
I think we are already seeing that shift. What we've seen in Vermont, what we've seen in Florida, I think these are all pointing towards a bit of a sea change in the way that communities think about childcare and the need for affordable childcare.
People need reliable child care in order to participate in the labor force.
