From what I know, Internet Addiction Disorder is not yet recognized as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or as we call it, the DSM, 5th edition. I think it's fair to say that almost anyone hearing about this case will be baffled by the lengths someone went to for an Internet fantasy. but it's the incredible criminal tragedy that really impacts me most. You have a young man who lost touch with reality and the people that actually loved him, his family. He lashed out at them rather than embracing their care.
