The novel itself follows the story of five generations of a Black Canadian and American family known as the Canes.
It traces their history from the 19th century slave trade in Virginia to modern-day Oakville, Ontario,
Of course, modern day meaning 1997 at the time of the book came out.
And the story follows Langston Cain V, a recently fired, divorced, and mixed-race narrator exploring his heritage to discover his own identity.
So definitely check it out.

This is a really great book that captures a part of Canadian history that is often overlooked.
So this is a historical nonfiction book.
It details the crucial role of black railway porters, the role that they played in combating systemic racism and shaping Canadian multiculturalism.
These men were often called George, regardless of their actual names.
And they fought fair labor rights and rights of citizenships.
The actions by these men had an effect on not only race relations, but also human rights, North American multiculturalism, community building, the shape and structure of unions, and the nature of travel and business across America and Canada.
Now, the book came out in 2019, and it's available as an audiobook on Audible and CELA as well.
