The Earth was a snowball two and a half billion years ago.

I mean, really, really very long ago.

It wasn't before life, but it was, you know, it was very inhospitable.

But plate tectonics create a lot of volcanoes.

That throws up a lot of carbon dioxide, which then rainfall scrubs out of the atmosphere.

And it helps make the Earth's temperature stable enough for life.

So there's a theory that plate tectonics are actually one of the things that makes Earth this fantastic place.

Yeah, and it's one of the moons of Jupiter.

Io, which is just volcanoes, volcanoes, volcanoes all the time.
