Episode 108: Face to Face
I'm so sorry. Are you okay? Are you okay? I'm like, I'm fine. I'm fine. You know, it's all good. The interesting part of because that happened, he put me back in the passenger seat. He's like, no, no, no, just you're fine. Just stay here. I'll talk to Robert later. It's like, you know, do that.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So it really probably was one of the only reasons why I was in the truck cab as opposed to in the bed at any point during that trip. And we loaded everybody up and then we headed back, you know, up the 15 and headed to Vegas. We got there, I think it was late in the day, I'd say late afternoon or so. Being that Mike had just moved there, I don't think that anybody knew where he lived just yet.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And I think his family had purchased a business there. I don't know if it was a gas station or like a cookie mart or something along those lines is what I'm sort of remembering. But I know that we got into town. Tony had to call Mike on a pay phone at wherever this business was and tell him, hey, we're in town. And then Mike didn't believe him, of course. He was like, shut up, don't be stupid.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And he's like, no, seriously, we're here. And then he kind of... realized that we were actually there. So we ended up at Mike's house that evening. And I know I distinctly remember his family was not happy about this group of kids just dropping in on him. There was no pre-plan to this trip at all. Like, where are we going to stay? Who has money? What are we going to eat?
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Like, none of that was thought out, right? We're just, we hopped in a car, we went. We ended up on his doorstep. I don't think his family had a choice at that point. So we all piled up in Mike's room for the night. They all stayed up, you know, kind of laughing and talking all night long. It was awkward. I mean, these are all really his friends. My only connection to it all was him, you know.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And I was always very friendly with all his friends. Like, we all got along fine. But, I mean, you know, that was definitely more his group than I really didn't really belong to that group that way. Yeah, so we got up the next morning. We headed out. I don't recall a whole lot of what happened that morning. I don't know if we... had breakfast.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I honestly don't remember any details as to what we did prior. I know that we got in the truck, same kind of positioning as far as everybody. I was in the passenger seat, Tony was driving, and then his three friends were in the back. And I want to say we were, I don't think it was quite halfway back to LA. I want to say this was
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Maybe an hour into the trip, I knew Charlie was looking a little pale. He looked a little green. And he said he wasn't feeling well. And he wanted to kind of just lie down for a minute. I don't know. They had been up all night talking, so I don't know if he was tired or sick or what the situation was. But he certainly wasn't feeling well. So he asked his friend, Key, to drive home.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
and uh he climbed in the back of the truck all three of them were in the back and uh he got back on the road and i remember we had to be just outside of barstow somewhere because i remember seeing barstow signs so we're heading from vegas back to la on the 15th and um All I remember was I knew Barstow was coming up. And then I think I must have fallen asleep.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I mean, I was pretty tired at that point. So all I remember was kind of laying my head against the window and starting to nod off. And then I woke up to... You probably have heard that sound. You know when you hit the little rumble strips on the side of the road when you're pulling over to change a tire or whatever? It makes that really super loud noise.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
All I remember was hearing that incredibly loud rumble strip sound. I remember hearing tires screeching. It was like the car... I'd lost control, so there was definitely a lot of... Like, there was the rumble strip, there was screeching, and there was... I don't know, if you've ever been in a car accident, it's a noisy event. It's loud.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I was not wearing a seatbelt, so when the car started flipping, I was basically just kind of rag-dolling inside of the car, and I just... I remember... like hitting the roof really, really hard with my like shoulder and my head. It flipped easily four to five times in the air. So there was a lot of, of,
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
various parts of it were hitting the ground, you know, the dirt, and it rolled up off the road and up a hill. And it was, the car landed facing the opposite direction. So when it stopped, when we stopped getting thrown around, we finally stopped and everything got quiet again. I just remember Ken and I, like, startled. We just looked at each other.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And then we almost simultaneously said, oh, shit. Like, it occurred to us there were fucking people in the back of that truck. You know, it was just now coming to our minds. So I jumped out of the passenger seat. The passenger door at this point is the side where facing the road parallel to the freeway and facing in the opposite direction or the direction essentially came from.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I know he came running around the truck. And I know that I saw someone in the dirt immediately to my left, like a little ways off. And I'm pretty sure it was Tony. But that was the only person I saw. And I got really, like, sick, like nauseous. And I laid back down in the dirt. Everything was spinning at that point. And then I was out. Like, I totally was unconscious.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
When I came to, he was sitting next to me. And I don't know the time frame of how long I was out, but I knew emergency services were there at that point. So I must have been out a little bit. There were firemen there and police were there and... I got up and I ended up walking over to where Tony was. He was just coming to, like, it was so strange. He was like out.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And then he started thrashing, like, like, you know, just, he didn't know what was going on. So he was like, these people are trying to help him. And he's like thrashing around. So these people are trying to help him. And he's like basically fighting them off. Because he doesn't know what's going on. He's just clueless as to what's just happened. So I grabbed his hand. Sorry.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
The only thing I could think to do was grab his hand and just start talking to him and just telling him, you're good. You're fine. Just, just let them do what they have to do. Just, just relax. Just calm down. And he did. And, uh, yeah, so they were able to get him kind of stabilized and, uh,
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
At that point, I was realizing that as bad as he may have been, his friend Lisa was apparently substantially worse. They were most concerned with her at that moment. She was apparently the most critical. They brought in a helicopter. They airlifted her. to the hospital. Lisa passed away, I think, pretty much on arrival at the hospital.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I think what I heard was that it's most likely she was struck by the truck when it was slipping and it probably crushed her. I think he had told me that her mom had to go identify her and She had so much swelling, like it was to the point where they're having to use like tattoos to to establish that it was, in fact, her because, you know, she had sustained some serious trauma. Um.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So, yeah, they airlifted Tony also because he was second worst off. And they had taken him to San Bernardino Hospital. Yeah, San Bernardino. So we were just outside of Barstow, but Barstow wasn't going to be able to deal with that kind of an accident or that kind of trauma. So they needed to get him somewhere a little bit better. So he went to San Bernardino.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I was taken by ambulance to Barstow along with Robert. Robert, again, was the third of the friends that was in the back. I just remember him screaming a lot. I'm sure he was in a lot of pain. I can't remember how many broken bones and things that he had. I don't recall exactly, but I remember he was definitely screaming a lot.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I was super resistant about going to the hospital, but they kept trying to get me on one of those boards that they strap you down to. I think they had to circle the ambulance like two or three times. I was like, no, no, I'm good. I'm good. Like I refused. And they finally got me to lay down and took me in by ambulance. So Key, Robert and I ended up at Barstow.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
As far as injuries, I had broken a, what do they call it, a chip fracture. Like I'd broken one of the vertebrae in the upper part of my neck, like the spine. But the x-rays at Barstow weren't quite detailed enough. So they decided they needed to transfer me from Barstow to Loma Linda so they could get better imaging to figure out kind of what happened and how serious it was.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Yeah, and that was kind of a drag because I was only 17 at the time, so they couldn't, like, do a whole lot with me. I was underage. So we had to wait for my parents to drive from L.A. to Barstow. And this was, like, I want to say Monday at a rush hour traffic. Like, it took them an obscene amount of time to get there. It just took forever. And they were mad as hell when they got there.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
They had signed whatever paperwork they needed to get me moved, and then they put me into an ambulance with Robert, and they moved both of us to Loma Linda at that point. I think it was probably evening, well into the evening when we got to Loma Linda. They did the imaging. They realized, I guess whatever the ship fracture was, they threw a brace on me, but they said it wasn't...
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
It wasn't that bad. They wanted me to go and have surgery to remove the chip, but I never did. So, yeah. So I went home that evening with a really ugly headache. Felt terrible because my parents were just livid. I mean, they were upset, rightfully so. They didn't know where I was. I took off, you know, and then next thing they're getting phone calls from, you know, the hospital or something.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
to come and get me. So yeah, good times. Later on, it was determined, I guess, that one of the tires had blown and that he had lost control of the truck because he'd lost a tire. Once I was home, I was pretty much on lockdown. My mom was having me go anywhere at that point. So I was kind of having to use Tony's Family and our friend Key as keeping me updated as to what was going on.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Key had gone out to see Tony at the hospital. he had improved like he had obviously taken a pretty good hit to the head but at that point he seemed to be because when I know he when he came back said Tony was sitting up and he was talking they were laughing and you know he was there so it was it was good
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Everybody moves back into the light, even if it takes them a minute. My name is Angela. I live here in Santa Clarita. I work in the cruise industry. I work in the corporate office, so not on the cruise ships themselves. I work on the customer service side of life. So I grew up in LA, so like Melrose, Fairfax area. I went to Fairfax High School.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
the accident happened on the 2nd of April coming back, um, after the whole April Fool's thing. So it wasn't until the 13th that I got a phone call from his family, um, that I should get over there and, uh, and see him. He drove me out there and, uh, I think by the time I got there, he wasn't talking. He wasn't responding at all.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And what I was told was that from the injury of the head, he had a lot of brain swelling. And they had done some surgery to try to relieve the pressure with tubes and all kinds of good stuff going on. But... But yeah, they couldn't control it, so he wasn't going to make it. I think at that point it was just a matter of kind of deciding when we were going to, you know, take him off life support.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So we were there all night in the hospital with him. Most of us were in the waiting room, the family. He had a big family. It was... He was the baby of the family, so he had four siblings, one brother and three sisters. So he was the fifth of that house. He celebrated his birthday, actually, in the hospital. So this happened the second, the accident happened on the second of his birthday.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
He celebrated his 20th birthday in the hospital on the 6th. And then by the 13th, he wasn't responsive really anymore. And then they took him off life support on the 14th, the next morning. Yeah, so his family kind of all went in there one by one and said their goodbyes. And then, yeah, his mom and I were the ones who decided to stay with him when he went off life support. So we stayed with him.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I saw Mike. He came into town. I can tell he felt like had he not started this, that, you know, none of it would have happened essentially, but. You know, I always kind of told him, you know, it was harmless. I mean, it was just Mike. I mean, Mike did stuff like that. He's just silly. He's funny. He likes to do silly stuff.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So, you know, no one would think, you know, a simple phone call like that would lead us down this insane path. But no, I know he definitely felt guilty. And I know it probably impacted his life from that point. I was on autopilot. Like, I know I never really kind of dealt with everything that had happened.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I was just on autopilot, just being kind of where I was supposed to be and doing things I was supposed to be doing. And I know I was being directed by his mom a lot. So his mom wasn't exactly a warm and fuzzy kind of person, ever. I didn't know her, like, I maybe met her a handful of times, but she wasn't exactly... like I said, warm and fuzzy, right? So she wasn't that person.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So when she kind of included me into a lot of what was going on, I mean, that was kind of special, you know? I remember that, like, for the wake that they did, I remember that she had come and gotten me. Like, they had gotten a limo and the family came, And they had me kind of go with the family. And I sat with the family during the services. So super weird. It was open casket.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
It was a lot of people. A lot, a lot of people. I remember a lot of people. I just remember that look of just pity on everyone's face. at the burial site, um, everybody was standing around and, and I know they were, they were doing their, I can't remember exactly what they did as far as services.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Um, I remember that the moment they started to lower the casket into the ground, like his grandma fainted and it was, you know, everybody just kind of gasped and, um, She was an older woman, you know, so we just thought, you know, it was just, it was a lot for a lot of people. So we just thought it was a lot for her. And yeah, so I don't remember who mentioned it.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I feel like it was maybe the brother or one of the siblings, but they said that she had said that she had seen his spirit leave his body. when the casket went into the ground, when they lowered it into the ground. So that's what apparently she fainted from, was seeing his spirit leave his body.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And I think because everyone brushed it off as just maybe kind of an eccentric Catholic old woman, I think. So I don't know that anybody really asked details. I got it secondhand. And that was really all I could remember was that that's what she had said she'd seen. I feel like. It wasn't long after the accident, I started to remember that dream I had. I started having little flashes of it.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
It wasn't the first time I'd had a dream kind of sort of come true. Do you know what I mean? Like almost deja vu-ish. you know, I occasionally have those kind of dreams. I'm sure everybody has those to some degree where, you know, you're sitting having a conversation with somebody and like, you know what they're going to say before they say it because you've already had this dream of it happening.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So it wasn't totally odd. Like I'd had those occasionally. So, or being able to, you know, kind of see a whole scene or action play out and you already kind of know what's coming because you've already kind of seen it. So, So it wasn't totally out of character for me. So yeah, when it occurred to me afterwards, I went, oh, that's what that meant.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I was like, well, I wish I really had better understanding of what that meant before we went on that trip. But yeah, so it was not too long afterwards that I put the two and two together. It never occurred to me to tell Tony's mom about it, but I spent some time with her after the accident.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And I think that's where I got this habit of kind of going to the cemetery because she was going to the cemetery every day. So she would get up every morning, get flowers, go to the cemetery, you know, clean off the headstone, you know, just kind of putting out the old flowers, doing the new flowers and, you know, going to visit him every day. That was what she did.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
My family immigrated back in like, I was two, so like 74. And we pretty much lived in that same small area, that neighborhood from that point on. So I want to say I was like my first year into high school, just a high school kid, like hanging out with my friends, avoiding going to school as much as possible. God, I hated going to school. But yeah, just the normal teenage stuff.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So I think that's kind of where I got into that habit of, I had started to do the same on my own. So yeah, it was just a normal morning, at least as normal as my morning was at that point. But this was probably a couple of months after the accident. It was a normal routine. I probably did this, I don't know, I want to say every day, but probably a good, you know, a few times a week.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Um, so I got up, got ready, uh, went and got flowers. Um, my, my mom's friend had a flower shop over on, uh, like Highland and Franklin. Um, so I went in there, I would see her and we'd sit down and have coffee and just chat for a It was normal like any other day that I was going to the cemetery, I guess. Nothing unusual. At this point, we're probably into summer, like early summer, maybe June.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And so it was nice. It was warm out. It was really kind of a beautiful day. And, uh, yeah, so I, I drove in, drove up to his grave site and, uh, to the normal RIS team, you know, I brought in the flowers and kind of sat down and there was no one there. It was like during the week, uh, there was really nobody there. It was, it was pretty empty.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Um, middle of the day kind of thing, uh, late morning probably. And I laid down next to the gravesite and was just kind of chilling, you know, talking. I didn't really talk anything out to any people, so I guess I was kind of talking stuff out either to him or myself or both of us, I don't know. But just talking out loud to myself.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I probably was cursing at him a bit for putting us into this stupid position and then bailing basically, you know, just starting this whole nightmare of a train of crap and then just, I'm out, you guys get to deal with it now kind of thing. And then just was kind of enjoying the sunshine and just
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
taking a breath and relaxing for just a second and kind of working through some of the feelings of all that had happened, you know, the last few months prior to that. So the, the accident, the, and just the chaos, um, that happened after. Um, so I'm laying there and, uh, I'm just looking up at the sky and it's a beautiful day, clear skies, not a cloud in sight.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
The sun shines like kind of behind me, so it's not really in my face. So I'm just laying there looking at the pretty blue skies and I blink and then almost immediately I see something in my face. Like, I mean, it had to be inches from my face. If it was a foot, I'd be shocked it was that far back. And I was startled.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Before my brain could even wrap its head around what was happening, my body completely reacted out of sheer panic. I jumped up from my laying down position. I start jumping up. So that's why I kind of know that I wasn't asleep. It wasn't imagination. It wasn't a dream. It wasn't anything like that. I know I physically reacted to this thing. It was almost water-like. It was like a bubble, right?
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So it's clear, but like a bubble, you can see it has a shape, like an outline, right? It's round. It was probably like the same size as my face. So I feel like... In relationship to me, it had to be, you know, about the same. As far as the rest of it, it didn't really have an outline. It was very, it happened very quickly. It was very squishy. It was like this, it moved like it was underwater.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
It was like Tony's face. It just, it gave me the feeling of him. And like, it looked like him. The shape of its face was, it very much looked like his face. Just water. And I panicked. I know the expression on my face was just sheer shock. It had to be.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And then, you know, as I started to, like, kind of make my way to up, you know, in a hot hurry, just because I freaked, you know, it just kind of jumped back away from me. I had that completely startled look. It really looked like it was just really surprised that I saw it, like I could see it. Like, That was the impression I got from it.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
You know, I grew up right off of Melrose, right in like the heyday of Melrose, like that, I want to say the late 80s era. probably mid to late 80s. You know, there's that really like alternative kind of punk scene going on. So it was fun. It was, you know, I could leave the house, go walking distance. There was restaurants and shops and all sorts of stuff to do. So, you know, it was a good time.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
But then the expression, and it was so bizarre because you wouldn't think something like that would have, like, that distinct expression. You know, I've heard all these other stories and, you know, people talk about spirits and things, and they're usually very, like... It's always described as just not much expression at all, you know, very kind of blank.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And this was just, it was very alive and very expressive, very surprised that I could see it, like really shocked. It almost looked like it, like I said, it felt bad that it surprised me. So it just speedily like zipped off, it zipped up and then it was completely gone. Like I probably could see it for a few feet and then it was just, it had just vanished.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
felt bad that i reacted like i did initially uh i and i i really kind of wanted to see it again so my immediate reaction was shit that was really a terrible way to react to someone visiting you um So, yeah, so my immediate reaction was to lay that down and, you know, work desperately at trying to kind of focus back in on it, trying to make it out again, but to no avail.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
It was already such an awkward time. I was already getting looked at in such a way. You know, like I said, that kind of pity look. And, you know, I was already kind of labeled as, you know, I'd gone through this big trauma. So the last thing I really wanted to do was... you know, be the weirdo that's seeing things. Yeah, so I didn't. I kind of just put it away.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I know in every fiber of me that I saw what I saw. Don't know what it was. I felt like it was him. Not at all like I would have pictured, you know, experiencing a spirit or someone like that. But yeah, I just, I put it away and don't really, don't really think about it a whole lot after.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Between that and, I know his sister had called at one point, or one of his, his oldest sister, Rebecca, had called me. And she had apparently gone to, I want to say a psychic. Um, if she was definitely struggling with the loss and I think she was just trying to get some like peace or closure. Um, and she said that the psychic had given her a message for me.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Um, and it was just basically about, it was just, um, kind of move on. It's, you're going to get married, you're going to have kids, you're going to have a family. And just, you know, don't dwell. Just keep living. That was all that I can remember that she said. And I think I was annoyed because it was so, I felt like it was so dismissive.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Like, really, that's all you've got for me is move on and you're going to get married, you're going to have kids and move on. That was it. I'm like, what a shitty thing to say. That, hey, I miss you and I'm sorry. Or, hey, you know, I'm a jackass for starting this whole nonsense or anything like that. Like, nothing. Just, hey, just move on. Gee, thanks. Okay, screw you too.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
You know, that kind of, that was kind of the vibe I had. Definitely has me more open-minded. When I hear, you know, descriptions that people give, things they've seen, definitely much more open-minded to Having that experience, you definitely, you aren't going to judge someone else for their experience. So I don't brush people off as crazy.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
It was fortunate to be there at that period of time. I think that the first time I actually saw Tony was towards, I want to say towards the end of that first year of high school. I don't know. I just saw him in passing one day. I think I was between classes for some reason. I was going to do something. And I kind of saw him walking through like the quad area.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I mean, you can tell when you're talking to someone and the way they talk about it. you know they're genuine about whatever they've experienced. So I'm just definitely much more open to, hey, there's definitely something way more out there than we can grasp or understand. I mean, yeah, I'd say the positive is definitely that
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I'm a hundred percent, you know, sure that there is definitely more out there. I'm, I, I've seen it. Um, so it just, your take on life and death is definitely different. Um, you know, it's not, it's not just, you know, lights out and it's over. It's, you just, you don't, you don't have that feeling, you know, you just just,
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
There's definitely going to be something more to it, whatever that is or what form you change into or whatever happens or whatever your spirit moves on to from there. But yeah, definitely. I think it also helps with it knowing that how you live your life, you know, just not doing any harm and just living a peaceful life.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And he caught my eye because he didn't look like anyone who had gone to our school. I mean... You get used to, you know, you're at the end of the year, so you've gotten used to seeing everybody come and go pretty much at that point. Big guy, super long hair, almost like football kind of structure because he's probably near 200 pounds, I think, at the time.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
But just big smile, just had kind of a presence to him, so he definitely caught my eye. I didn't talk to him for quite a bit. I don't remember exactly how it came to be. Like I know, because like I said, I lived right down the street. So I don't know.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
He must have at some point determined I lived really close because I'd start to see his friend's little like Volkswagen Rabbit, like him and his friend driving by the house. Randomly back and forth. And then he ended up following my girlfriend and I. She used to live just down the street from me. And then at the beginning of that year, her family relocated over to Toluca Lake.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So I know it was like a Friday. We were just heading to her house for the weekend kind of thing. And they ended up following us. And it was right there. There's a bridge right over the 101. I want to say it's like where the two Coinga sites connect right there somewhere. She stopped and she looked at me because they were behind us and there was really nobody else around.

And she looked at me and she's like, are you going to go say something? And I'm like, no, I was very, very shy, quiet kind of person. I was like, no, no, I'm good. And she's like, fine, I'll go. I was like, okay. So she gets out and she gave him my phone number. Then he actually got out and handed me his info. He wrote down his name, address, phone number, all that good stuff.

Episode 108: Face to Face
And then we left, and I guess we went out to the movies. That's how we started, at least. And then, yeah, there was pretty much two years of inseparable. He ended up moving in at one point, redecorating my entire room, painting, just took over. But that's him. That's how he was. I was... I'm a really mellow person, and he's just, he was a personality, you know?
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
We would drive around endlessly, especially up in the hills, like off of Mulholland. So, you know, going up, relaxing at the view, listening to music, going to the beach, moving to Big Bear. Everything was just real easy with us. We got along great.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face

Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So this was a couple of years after we had originally met. So this is now 1990 that we're talking about. I recall being at home in my room asleep. And I had woken up from something. I know I'd gone back to sleep. And that's when I started to have this really kind of odd feeling. I used to call it a nightmare. It wasn't a nightmare in a traditional form or something terrible was happening.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I mean, the feeling of something terrible was happening and there was something very chaotic, very upsetting happening. I couldn't necessarily see anything. Like I said, it was just, it was kind of dark and muddied and almost in a foggy way is the way the dream had come to me. And the only real visual I can recall in that darkness was just like chaos and like flashing lights.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And that's really visually all I can remember other than that feeling of just... Panic and not sure what's going on. And I knew something wasn't right and something bad was happening. I just, I didn't know what it was. So I was startled awake by a phone call. And this is, you know, the house phone. This is the 90s. We didn't have cell phones. We didn't do that.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
We didn't even have pagers yet at this point, right? If you wanted to get in touch with someone, you're calling their house. That's how it was. And I remember answering the phone. And I'm startled awake, so I'm super confused right now. I'm, like, not sure what's going on. You know, I'm just... getting my bearings of like, okay, I'm here. I'm home. I'm in my room. Okay. All's good.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And I remember, um, Tony's friend called and he was really brief. Like all I pretty much said was, Hey, it's Mike. He's like, when Tony gets there, just tell him April fools. And I'm like, okay, sure. Whatever you say. And that was it. And then he hung up and I was like, okay. And I went back to sleep after that. I was just like, okay, I'm done with all of you. I'm just going back to bed.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And then a little while later, Tony comes waltzing in, as he did. He lived with us on and off. He had his own case, so he pretty much came and went whenever he wanted. So yeah, he came in, woke me up. And then I told him Mike called. And he's like, what did he say? And I said, oh, all he said was April Fool's. Like, I didn't understand what that meant. I'm like, okay, that's all he had to say.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And then he hung up. And he looked mad. Like, what? Like, what happened? And he's like, that jackass called me this morning and told me he's in town. And as kind of a backstory, Mike had lived right down the street from Tony's parents' restaurant. They kind of grew up, I think they met maybe in junior high or so, so they'd known each other for quite a while at this point. But his family...
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
moved to Vegas probably a few months prior to that. So Mike called and said that he was at Cantor's Deli, which is a totally normal place, a hangout that we would go to. It's a deli, but we would go. It was one of those places that you went after you went clubbing kind of thing. So everybody went there after their nights. But yeah, a lot of times in the It's been there for ages.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Super famous deli on Fairfax. And then it turns out he had done that to another friend of ours, Key. And I guess Key and Tony ended up running into each other at Canner's and they're both looking for Mike and there was no Mike. So those two show up at my house and they're all like heated right now because he's, you know, he's just played this joke on them. So then
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Tony gets the bright idea to get him back he's like let's drive to Vegas and show up on his doorstep so yeah then that's what we ended up doing we uh piled into his truck They went and picked up a friend of theirs who I think recently reunited with. I think her name was Lisa. At this point, I had only known her maybe 24 hours, maybe. She went to school with them.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
They had just started kind of, they ran into each other somewhere. So they just started hanging out and talking again. So they thought it'd be really funny to include Lisa into this little trip or adventure to go to Vegas to see Mike. It was a little odd, but I remember he had done that trip with a friend of his maybe a month or so earlier.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And I think it was one of those where they were out clubbing, going to see bands or whatever they were doing. And then they just thought it would be super funny to drive to Vegas that night. So they drove out there, they hung out, gambled, did whatever, and then drove back.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
I feel like that's where that kind of idea came from, is because he had already done the trip with someone else, so he thought it would be no big deal. He had a pickup truck, but it was like a bench seat, a two-seater. There was no back to it, right? So it was the bed and the two-seater. Or you could probably squeeze three people in on the bench.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So to get the idea to go that long a distance in the back of someone's truck was a little... I don't know. Looking back at it now, sure, it was stupid, but I guess we didn't think about it. At the time, it wasn't that odd to hop into the back of somebody's truck and go somewhere, but it would never cross my mind to do something so stupid now. So Tony was driving. I was in the passenger seat.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
Key and Lisa were in the back of the bed, and They wanted to add one last friend to this party who he'd been friends with also for a very long time and was also part of the same group of friends. So that friend had moved, I think, out to Covina somewhere in that region. So he says, hey, it's right on the way. We'll just pick up Robert and just tell him he's got to go.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
We drive over there, and this is how town he is. He tells somebody to get in the car, they're getting in the car. It's just how he was. So he showed up on his friend's doorstep, Robert, and then told him we're going. I know that when we picked up Robert, I think he hadn't seen him for a little bit, so I know he wanted to chat with him.
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
So he's like, hey, do you mind if Robert rides in the passenger seat, and you can just ride in the back for a little bit with...
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
with Lisa and Key I'm like okay that's fine so he was apparently spun up or super excited at this point so he gets in the driver's seat Robert gets in the passenger seat and I'm just now starting to get into the back of the truck like I've got one leg or one foot on the bumper and then one foot slung over like the back tailgate so I'm not in the car in this truck yet and he takes off
Otherworld
Episode 108: Face to Face
And I go flying off the back of this thing. landing in the street with my head probably like inches from the curb. And it like practically ripped my leg off as he took off. So he realized that I wasn't in the truck. I don't know if someone screamed or what that happened, but he jumps out. He grabs me up off the ground, hugging like huge bear hugs, just like, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.

You're like, no, no, you go ahead. Just for me, just hearing you, it just relates because I'm a new Christian and I felt that same way. I didn't want to come to Christianity because I thought there were all these rules and I thought I'm in this place in my life. Why would I lay down how I've been living my whole life?
The George Janko Show
The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
And then when I got to see God, when I really got to understand his love, like I got to see him as father. which caused me to have this love in my heart to say, you love me so much. You have loved me through every single foolish moment. You even gave me Girls Gone Bible when I was reading the Bible and I knew your word, but I was still continuously falling. But you still loved me so much.
The George Janko Show
The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
That then caused a love in my heart to be like, I love you so much and I respect you so much that I'm going to lay my life down for you. You are worth everything. I'm done. I lay it down for you. I respect you so much. And so when you get that encounter with him, that real encounter of reverence,

The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
When we all start to look at it like it's rules and laws, it then shows you that, no, this is actually freedom. When I decided to lay down the things that I thought I could never give up, that was freedom. I come from the world. I wasn't raised in Christianity. I didn't have mentors.
The George Janko Show
The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
Him, me following this thing and laying down everything that I thought I could never give up was freedom in my life. I never thought I could have rest in my life like I do. I never thought I could have this peace. I grew up in chaos, dysfunction, hell my whole life since I was a little girl. And I start following this thing and it starts healing my mind. It's freedom.
The George Janko Show
The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
And so when you get that revelation and that encounter of respect for him and you decide to lay it down and follow him, you realize that none of that stuff matters. This is true life, you know?
The George Janko Show
The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
No, it's so true. Like praying for them and praying for With them and for them, I had a moment where, because my parents don't come from faith at all, and my mom was really struggling, and so I just went to bat for her every morning. Lord, please, please. And then all of a sudden, she calls me one day. She goes, you won't believe this. I feel so good today. And I just went to church.
The George Janko Show
The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
And that's how powerful the power of prayer is. And also, you know, everyone is bearing some kind of something in their lives. And so nobody is going to reject prayer. And so simply being like, can I just pray for you? I also had a moment with a family member. And you sit with them in love. Like, I love how you guys say that. And you just pray for them.
The George Janko Show
The Christian Avengers | EP. 100
And then you just see the light come in their eyes. So I love that you mentioned that. Because prayer is everything. It's changed my family's life. It really has. Yeah, so that's the one thing, like every morning in your prayer, don't ever forget to pray for the people you love. Changed my life.

That's a great question. You like that question, do you? Yeah, great question.

But you know why you have that peace? Because it's a peace of God because you came honestly. Like, that's when I always have peace is when I come honestly and raw. It's not when I have a facade up. It's when I bring it to his feet with honesty. Because the truth is, is I'm curious about that too. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm proud of you.
