If you do nothing but ask these follow-up questions in a conversation, and then you all go your separate ways, everyone will remember you as being someone that cared about them, that was interested in their story, that was participating in the conversation.

But yes, be the person that's interested, that asks these follow-up questions, that makes people feel like you really care about what they're saying.
