First elected in 1987, Pelosi would go on to become one of the most effective leaders of the Democratic Party.

She could reliably deliver Democratic votes on must-pass legislation when necessary, although her first speakership came at a complicated time with a looming financial crisis.
She reclaimed the gavel in 2019.
During her tenures as Speaker, she oversaw the passage of landmark legislation, including the Affordable Care Act, and enacted trillions in new spending as part of the American Rescue Plan.

Court documents show Christopher Moynihan's arrest came after he allegedly texted that he planned to kill Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House.
He's scheduled to appear in a New York court on Thursday.
His arrest comes amid rising threats to lawmakers.
The Capitol Police say its agents are on track to work through roughly 14,000 threat assessment cases by the end of the year.
It's a dramatic spike from case workloads in previous years.

Trump announced the commutation of the former congressman via his social media platform.
He wrote that George Santos will be released from prison, quote, immediately.
Santos pleaded guilty to a raft of federal charges, including wire fraud and identity theft for, among other things, stealing people's identities to make donations to his campaign.
He reported to prison in July.
In his post, Trump praised Santos for always voting Republican.

House leadership spent the weekend in discussions with fiscal conservatives who voted against advancing the bill out of committee. House Speaker Mike Johnson said one area of negotiation is accelerating work requirements for Medicaid. Hardliners were concerned the requirements wouldn't kick in soon enough.
