Back in 2013, Jason Collins stunned the sports world when he published a cover story in Sports Illustrated with the headline, I'm a 34-year-old NBA center.
In an interview with ABC recorded just hours after the announcement, Collins said he'd fought his sexuality for years before embracing it.

Collins played 13 seasons in the NBA, only one of them after he came out.

Last year, Collins married his longtime partner.
Then, just months later, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a fast-moving form of brain cancer.
