You'd have the GM and bench coach, father-son dynamic.
This reportedly, again, hard to go back in all the archives.
We believe the first ever instance of a GM matchup
hiring his father as the manager.
That's a very unique set of circumstances in the game.
And the Mattinglys, they're both, as you know, Donnie, from being around him a lot in Toronto, impressed in the same way.
Both really professional people who I'm sure will be able to handle this well.
But to your point, Kevin, it is a little bit...
difficult, especially if it's your son who's the GM and he has a boss who's the president.
And it's not even entirely sure that you're the guy for the long, long term in light of the reality that they had already offered the job, as Bob Nightingale reported, to Alex Cora and Cora decided to stay home.
Now, if I can make a quick point on Alex Cora,
Alex is in a great position.
Now, setting aside the the rather interesting images that probably a lot of us have seen on social media of the jet taking the coaches back to Boston after they've been fired and Jason Veritech flashing the thumbs down and Alex not looking really devastated that he lost his job.
Well, if you pull back and look at it.
Alex Cora's guaranteed $7 million this year and next, whether he manages another game in the major leagues or if he just manages his kids in recreational ball.
So Alex doesn't need the job right now.
He's, in fact, according to many accounts, quite happy to not have to be working right now given just the chaos of what he left.
in Boston, so it's maybe not the ideal circumstance for Don Mattingly to step in, but you know this about Donnie from watching him work in Toronto for those years with John.
He has the respect of everybody in the game, okay?
