Why were they fighting about it?
Why did we have to come together about it?
Why did we have wars about it?
And my son and I were talking about it quite a bit during the lockdown.
And it was a way to sort of study what this country in general writ large is trying to do by focusing on your lineage.
I didn't feel a responsibility to any of the great stuff.
I did feel attendant to being an American.
For whatever reason, I think that's important.
I wish I had talked to you before I did it.
I put on other people's clothes and I pretend it's myself.
But now back to Grandpa taking you to the restaurant.
He was a pretty impressive amateur athlete.
In high school in North Carolina, he set records in track and field, in football, and in boxing.
Records that stood for 30 or 40 years.
And then he went to World War II.
And the bombers, he was the radio guy.
And the thing blew up in his ear and made him deaf.
