You're just getting more information that you already knew that doesn't actually add to the dramatic tension of the events that are ongoing. Whereas in the first movie, it is a wholly self-contained film within one timeline, as opposed to needing these like bridges to go into into the past that don't end up going away. Also, you get rid of Robert De Niro.
