It's a great start, but I talked to him after the round.
He was a little disappointed because he played the fives and one under.
Now, he came in here with a strategy that he really doesn't think he can hit the par fives, or certainly not 13 and 15 with ease, and so in two shots.
So he's been laying up on them and trying to get those wedges in, and that was the problem today.
He hit wedges that looked good.
But the greens are a little bit firmer here, he said, and they're kind of rolling further than he wanted, rolling off the back, as was the case in one of them.
And so he's got to get scoring on those par fives, because there's not a lot of really good scoring opportunities on this golf course.
But he looked good.
I think he's strong mentally.
And, you know, we've seen him get into, if he gets in the hunt and he gets down there, boy, that switch flips.
And he just starts...
grinding it away.
We've seen him win against Phil Mickelson at Pebble Beach.
We saw what happened at Oakdale when he sinks a 72-foot putt in the playoff.
He loves that kind of tense moments, that grinding it out and to make a great shot to win.
So you're right, if he can get himself in position come Sunday morning, I think I'd like to see him battle down the backside on Sunday.
Oh, I take the past winners for sure.
I mean, Rory said today, you know, once you win one here, it's just so much easier to get in there and get in the hunt to win the second time.
Because I think there's a lot of, listen, these guys, this is one of the few tournaments of the year where they're standing on the first tee on Thursday and they're nervous.
