I went into a really strange sense of calm which was actually concerning because when I went into that sense of calm, a feeling of warmth started to overtake my body and my extremities and I found out later that's actually the first signs of hypothermia.
I didn't know it at the time.
I basically put my arms over my ski and I just laid there and I remember looking up at the sky and I saw the beautiful southern cross glittering in the sky and
I thought, how amazing, how beautiful is this?
I had that feeling of gratitude.
And then really quickly another thought happened.
You're going to die if you don't move.
Your boat's not coming back.
You can't see them.
You've actually got to keep moving forward.
You've got to swim.
And so slowly but surely I pushed that ski away from me and I started to move my arms and legs, just this tiny little dog paddle.
And eventually I saw the lights of the boat coming back to me.
So it's 12 minutes of submersion in the bite until your hypothermic ended up being in for 10 minutes.
And by the time I was pulled aboard the boat, I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
It took a long time to get my body temperature back up.
And there's no help coming out there.
You're days out of range of help.
There's no helicopter coming.
