There's just no way what they were doing was sustainable.
If they were looking to make a profit, which clearly they weren't, they were going to never make a profit.
But in terms of trying to diversify their economy, trying to get some other source of revenue besides the petro, I don't think that the Saudis are going to give up on golf in that regard.
I still think they'll try to
build golf courses and hotels and all of that in Saudi Arabia.
But as it relates to competitive golf, it was an abject failure because people really only watch sports that matter.
And everybody saw through this ruse and knew that it was more of an exhibition than a competition.
Why was Greg Norman so hell-bent on taking down the PGA Tour?
I don't know.
I guess he just had an ax to grind.
I mean, early on, he had propped up the idea of an elite tour of players.
And famously, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus stood up and said, no, look, we had the chance to do something similar back in our heyday in the 60s and 70s and early 80s.
And we said no, because it wasn't good for golf.
But Greg just, it seemed to me, was only interested in what was good for Greg.
Let's get a small group of guys together and let's just play week after week after week.
Now, something like that came along called the WGCs.
It was a small group of guys.
Tiger almost won half of them.
And guess what?
The world of golf lost interest in them because what matters is the pipelines to building professional golfers.
