Today is National Poinsettia Day, where we celebrate the festive little plant that screams, deck the halls, but also don't let your dog eat me because I am poisonous.
So how did this Mexican flora become the unofficial poster child for Christmas decor?
Well, it all started in 1825 when the U.S.
ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett, took a trip down south.
Really?
They named the plant after him?
Yeah, during a wet t-shirt contest at Senior Frogs, he stumbled outside, spotted that exotic plant, and thought, hey, this would go great next to my Christmas tree.
Oh, I spilled some of my taco on it.
So in true American fashion, he smuggled it back through customs into the U.S., named the plant after himself, and the rest is history.
