By mid-afternoon, the snow had turned to sleet across most of the state, tamping down higher snow accumulations that had been forecasted.

But the icy sheen poses its own risks.

Power outages were relatively modest by mid-afternoon, but as the storm continues, more outages are possible.

The storm brought travel to a near halt.

More than 2,700 flights into and out of the three New York City-area airports were canceled Sunday, and New Jersey Transit suspended all rail and bus service.

Operations may resume on Monday, but no official word on when.

Another storm Sunday could coat the region in up to five inches of snow.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for areas around the Great Lakes, Ontario, and Erie.

Up to four feet of snow could blanket parts through Wednesday.

Strong winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour could create whiteout conditions.

Farther west, the Buffalo area is also bracing for heavy lake-effect snow.

Some isolated spots could get up to two feet.

Snow and strong winds are also spreading from the northern plains to the upper Midwest as an Arctic cold front hits the central and eastern U.S.

over the next couple of days.
