New York has already shivered through one of the coldest winters in recent memory, but a new blast of arctic air whipped up by strong winds are making for life-threatening conditions up and down the eastern seaboard.
Lows in New York will be pushing towards zero, with winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour.
Lows in the teens are happening as far south as North Carolina, and a large swath of upstate New York and New England were already below zero as of midnight.
Mamdani burst into the national spotlight this past year with a mayoral campaign that captivated the left and piqued the interest of centrists.

In a three-way race, he won more than 50% of the vote, thumping one-time New York political icon Andrew Cuomo by nine points.

Snow is forecast to spread across the region late Friday afternoon.
It should intensify overnight before heading out to sea by midday Saturday.
Up to eight inches of snow could blanket the region, stretching from northeastern Pennsylvania across northern New Jersey, New York, Long Island, and into eastern Connecticut.
It would be the second significant snow to hit the region in the past two weeks, as much as six inches of snow coated a large swath of New Jersey earlier this month.
