What these technologies encourage us to do is to not figure out what we want on our own and just defer to the external because it's so pervasive and steady and available.

I think it's actually a little more complicated than that.

So achievement players, what they care about is winning.

Striving players, what they care about is an experience of struggle.

But for some striving players, the experience of struggle they want, they only get when they're being hyper-competitive.

So both striving players and achievement players can be super competitive.

Like some people, the joy and the pleasure they get comes from really trying hard to win.

I think the big difference is...

is the kind of reflective control they have over the game they're playing.

So if you're an achievement player and you're just trying to win, then the value of the game for you is winning.

You're just going to try to win.

If you're a striving player and you value something else, like I value a thrill, right?

That means that I can be super competitive in a game.

And if I step back and I'm like, was that thrilling?

No.

Then I can change games.

I can go to a different game.
