The 20-minute red card is the result of an initial yellow card, with the incident then reviewed during the game by the foul play review officer.
If it's upgraded, then the player will leave the field of play, but the impacted team can bring a replacement on for that player once the 20 minutes have elapsed.
It is awarded for technical offences such as high tackles, with the permanent red card reserved for acts of thuggery.
Now, the FFR and Ligue Nationale du Rugby published a statement yesterday reaffirming their opposition to the controversial measure.
They claim it represents a major danger to rugby.

And finally today, UCC will remain in Division 1B of the Energy All-Ireland League next season after their promotion relegation playoff with Shannon was abandoned on Saturday.
That game was stopped after 68 minutes at the Mardyke when the students' captain Sam O'Sullivan took ill on the pitch
and required CPR before being brought to Cork University Hospital for further treatment.
The club's president, John Fitzgerald, reported on Sunday that O'Sullivan was comfortable and stable.
UCC had been leading that game 31-12 when it had been brought to a halt and the National Competitions Committee of the IRFU has ruled that the result will stand.
