CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

You're listening to Crowd Science from the BBC World Service, the show that answers your science questions. I'm Caroline Steele, and I'm doing my best to recognise a series of famous faces. Oh God. Okay. That could be David Attenborough, and I should 100% recognise him. Embarrassed, I'm not sure, because I've seen literally everything he's ever done. But I'm going to say yes. I'm going to say that's David Attenborough, am I right? It is, yes. Thank God.

Why can't I recognise faces?

Olen testannut ympÀristönÀ. Kiitos kysymykseen tÀnÀ pÀivÀnÀ. Hei, olen Jeroen.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

It's only a team of about 20 people. And then one day my mentor Fi came up to me and said, I'm so sorry I couldn't come into the office yesterday. I hope the other Fi took good care of you. And I basically had spent the whole day before talking to who I thought was my mentor. And it turns out it was a stand-in Fi. And I didn't notice. I thought they were the same person. And this is after having worked with this person every day for a month. I still didn't notice that it wasn't her on one of the days.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Thank you so much. I'm really glad you asked this question because it means I get to explore my own experience a bit, which I've never done. I've always struggled to recognize faces. And amazingly, I'm not the only crowd science presenter with this experience. I'm joined in the studio by fellow face forgetter, Marni Chesterton. Hi, Marni. Hello. I'm so jealous you're doing this.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

I did one online. Okay, so I went to visit Sarah Bate. She's a psychologist at Bournemouth University, and we heard from her at the start of the show. She put me through a proper face blindness assessment, which basically consisted of a number of different tests. Interesting. What did they involve? Okay, so first there was a series of statements about my day-to-day experiences, and I had to say how strongly I agreed or disagreed with the statement.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

I feel like I frequently offend people by not recognizing who they are. Yes, that happened literally two days ago. Somewhat agree. It is easy for me to recognize individuals in situations that require people to wear similar clothes. No, similar clothes is worse. Strongly disagree.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Sitten mÀ mÀÀrittelin, kuinka usein tunnen erilaisia aspekteja ympÀristömyötÀ. NÀmÀ ovat se, mitÀ me tunnistamme olevan yksityiskohtaiset ympÀristömyötÀ. Mielenkiintoista.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

I tell you what, I think I know who that is, but I'm not confident. So I think this person is familiar to me and I think he was the president of the United States. That's correct. Yay, I've got one and it's Bill Clinton. Okay, no idea who that is. I'm semi-convinced these are just random photos you've taken and not actual celebrities. Oh, I can do him as well. That's Boris Johnson.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Voi! Kiitos, ettÀ tunnistit ensimmÀisen vuoden pÀÀministeriÀ. Olin todella iloinen siitÀ. HÀn on melko erityisen nÀköinen. Ei usko, etten tunnistanut MarniÀ. Olen kysynyt listaa, ja annan sinulle suurimpia nimisiÀ. En tunnistanut Paul McCartneya, Bob Dylania, Colin Firthia, Harrison Fordia, Toma Hanksia ja monia muita.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

KyllÀ, sinÀ olet Caroline. SiinÀ on noin 40%, 23 out of 60. Vau. MinÀ hankkasin sen. EhkÀ minun kaikkein pahimmat testini. SinÀ hankkasit sen, Tom. Minulle tÀrkein asia on Famous Faces-testi.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

My performance is in line with being faceblind, which has been great therapy for me. But we're here to answer listener Jeroen's question, which is, is it normal for recognizing faces to get harder as you get older? He thinks he might have struggled with it for a while, but he's noticed it's got sort of dramatically worse with age. So let's start with what face blindness actually is. Here's Sarah again.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

That seems like a lot of people. That's higher than I was expecting too, because for me, you and the producer of this program, Joe, are the only people that I've met that struggle with recognising faces. But I think maybe people don't talk about it that much? Yeah, I've always imagined that most people are just somewhere on this line of not really recognising people, and most people are just winging it.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Minun isÀni on erityisen hyvÀ tunnistamaan kaupoja. Tai luulen, ettÀ hÀn on erityisen hyvÀ. EhkÀ hÀn on yleisö.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Mielenkiintoista.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Joten monille ihmisille, kuten meiltÀ, huoneellisuus saattaa aloittaa lapsuudessa. MeillÀ on monta asiaa, jotka voivat sijoittaa huoneellisuuden kokemuksiin. Voinko testata sinut, Marni? Muistatko, mitÀ ne ovat? PienemmÀt sosiaaliset interaktiot tai autismi, visuaaliset vaikutukset lapsuudessa. Minulla on seuraava. KyllÀ, minulle myös.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Okay. Is anyone looking at what's happening in the brains of people with face blindness? Yes. So I spoke to a neuroscientist about what's going on in our brains when we recognise or don't recognise faces. And that's coming up next.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

Olet kuullut Crowd Sciencein BBC World ServiceistÀ, joka kÀyttÀÀ tietoa, jotta voimme nÀhdÀ maailman ympÀrillÀmme enemmÀn selkeÀmmin. Olen Caroline Steele ja olen johtanut Maani Chestertonin kanssa. Hei! Olemme vastaamaan kysymykseen Yroonin kuulijoille Ruotsissa. HÀn haluaa tietÀÀ, onko normaalia pysyÀkseen tunnistamalla nÀköjÀrjestelmiÀ, kun olemme kasvaneet. TÀllÀ hetkellÀ olemme löytÀneet, ettÀ nÀköjÀrjestelmiÀ voidaan aloittaa ennen kuin olet edes syntynyt. Se on osa genetisen kÀyntiÀ, jota olet kÀsitellyt.

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

CrowdScience
Why can't I recognise faces?

To understand if or how our ability to recognize faces is impacted by aging, we need to know exactly what's going on in the brain, right? So I spoke to Zaira Cataneo. She's a neuroscientist at the University of Bergamo in Italy, and she researches face perception.
