Welcome to Fuelcast.
I'm Carrington Clark and this is your source to stay on top of the numbers behind the ongoing global energy crisis.
It's Wednesday, May the 13th.
We're recording mid-morning.
Let's have a look at the latest figures.
The price of Brent crude has risen again, now sitting at around $110 a barrel.
And since we last checked in, the national average price of unleaded has stayed roughly level at $1.84 per litre.
And the national average price of diesel has dropped slightly to $2.42 per litre.
Today, I'm joined by Alan Kohler to dig into the major energy headlines.
Good morning, Alan.
Good morning, Carrington.
Alan, I spent many hours yesterday locked away from the world, poring over these budget papers.
Now, there were big other ticket items, obviously, when it comes to
what's happening with negative gearing, capital gains tax discount.
But looking specifically at what they're doing when it comes to the energy crisis and the price of fuel, there wasn't any extension of the fuel excise cut that they put in place earlier on in this crisis.
It will come to an end at the end of June.
What do you make of that?
And what is it going to mean for the price of petrol that people are paying?
These things can be shifted though, can't they, Alan?
Is it possible that if we see an extension of the crisis or even a further lift in the price of oil, do you think the government will be tempted to once again cut it to ensure that people aren't dealing with much higher prices when they fill up?
