You know, he took more of an interest in me when I got into the business.
You know, he grew up in an era where the greatest bit of familial pride was your son following in your footsteps.
And he received that with my dad.
And the fact that I was able to do it in the latter stages of his life was an incredible honor for him because I think people see the end result of Harry Carey's life and his career, but they don't realize he was an orphan.
He grew up in a tough part of St.
Louis.
Couldn't afford the uniform for parochial school.
He sold newspapers and really had to hustle to get to where he is.
And he was a guy that left no stone unturned to accomplish what he was able to accomplish.
And the fact that his son saw the pratfalls and things that he was going through made
that he wanted to do what his dad did was, I think, validation for him as a person, as a father, and yes, as a broadcaster too, and the same for my dad.
You know, I went to Georgia.
I got to spend time with my dad and connect with him.
We'd go to work every day.
I'd go to the ballpark and sit with him or sit in the back of the booth and
watch and listen and observe how he would interact with his coworkers, how he would do the game.
And some of that stuff wore off via osmosis.
I didn't have as much of that with Harry, which I had.
I was supposed to work with him in 98, but he died before the season started.
So that opportunity slipped away from us and left kind of a
