They were efficient in front of goal.
Their forward 50 pressure was elite.
But there was just a few times that I think Chris Fagan will be showing.
And I've seen him do this a number of times over the years, showing all the goals and telling the players, how can we stop this?
And I know the first centre bounce after three-quarter time where they had the new skipper and the old skipper in the middle, and they've just walked it straight out of the front.
And as a defender, you need pressure on that ball coming out of a stoppage.
And then other times, just the simple little overlaps where players just had brain fades.
And there were senior players where you can't impact the person with the ball, so you leave your opponent to squeeze up to them, but then they just do a little dinky kick over the top and that leaves your three other defenders in no man's land because they don't know whether to push up or come back.
It was a display that I haven't seen from the Brisbane Lions consistently for a long time, especially for a whole quarter.
They look like they were defending by themselves.
The mids were trying to get the ball but didn't want to spread defensively.
They've had a shaky four weeks.
And there's no doubt, you can talk about, we gave Essendon a reason for the injuries last year.
There's no doubt they've got a lot of injuries in that team that's
having an impact on the side.
But still, there's enough quality in that side to put up better performance than what they did in that third quarter.
But more importantly, over the last four weeks.
And they've got a tough run ahead of them.
So there's no doubt Chris Fagan would have sat back and eyeballed them yesterday in the team meeting and said, if we want to have any chance of going as a three-peater or any chance of making that top six or top ten, we can't put out performances like that considering they're sitting in eighth spot with a tough four or five weeks ahead of them.
