We've got to say yes, where for decades we've said no.
And the people who said no, the not in my backyards, the NIMBYs who said no, thought they were doing the right thing.
But here we are 40 years later, and we know we have killed the prospects of a generation by continuing to say no.
And the feds...
It's hard for them.
The feds have levers that can have an impact on the states.
The states have levers that can have an impact on local council.
But at the end of the day, this is still a fight where older, richer Australians who are already there don't want change around them.
And that is the ugliest political fight you can ever imagine.
I've always liked โ there was a Speaker of Congress over in the U.S.
many years ago, Tip O'Neill.
He said all politics is local and all our housing problems are local and it's hard for the feds to fix it.
So, feds are about a quarter, and in the States, you're about 40% of all spending in Australia.
But of course, you know, they tax and they spend.
Sometimes what they do is give a tax cut or give a subsidy.
You know, you're seeing that with
fuel taxes at the moment.
You've seen it recently with electricity costs.
There was another tax cut announced in the budget.
So sometimes, even if governments aren't spending more, they are giving families or perhaps businesses the money to spend more.
